Does clipboard work only for text?

A newbie question just as the subject above says.
Cannot copy/paste file(s) or folder(s) since "Paste(P)" remain grayed out in the destination OS(Host or Guest). I tried clipboard as the get-around of sharedfolders trouble, in vain.
User manual says ",,,, VirtualBox will always make sure that both clipboards contain the same data. ,,,,,,,." Does this "data" exclude files and folders?
