VM 2.1, Vista Host, XP Guest, Cannot access internet

Hi all,

I am new to VB, but I worked a lot with VMWare before.

I have installed a fresh VB 2.1 on a Vista Ultimate SP1 32 bits Host.

I have created 1 new virtual machine with XP Pro. I have installed the VB Additions, SP3 and can access shared folders, USB devices and all other things without any problem.

My only issue is with the Network. I cannot access anything from my Guest.
The host is in DHCP and the Guest too. I have checked the Guest network interface and it receives the 10.0.X ip configurations for ip address, gateway and DNS server.
The network card displays no error.

BUT, I still cannot access the outside network. I can't even see my Host.
From the Host I can see the Guest, but cannot access it.

I have tried in NAT and nothing worked.

I then tried in Host Interface Networking, but no TAP adaptor was installed either on my Host or on my Guest and so was not able to bridge network interfaces.

I also tried in Internal Networking, but no chances too.

I have tried with my anti-virus/firewall off on the Host, but still no chance.

Do anyone have a clue on this and can help me troubleshoot this issue?
Maybe a complete VB 2.1 re-install? Downgrade?

Thanks for your help!

Possible Firewall issue

Hi All,

I have forgotten to let you know that I am running Outpost Security Suite, and that after a deeper search in the FAQs and other Posts, it seems to be related.

I will investigate this issue tonight when I will be back home and will let you know.

Apparently I have to modify a setting on the Host system to disable content filtering of my security suite.

I'll let you know...

Hi ! In Network settings set 'Intel 1000 ...' - it is above NAT setting and try to connect to the Internet.

Fixed!

Home now!

Thanks CRAZYFROG for the advice and the quick answer.
I have not tried this as my previous advice was the good solution.

In fact, as I am running Outpost Security Suite on my Vista Host, it filters the packets from VB and deny them.

To allow the NAT translation with Outpost Security Suite, you have to follow the steps below:
1- Open OSS parameters.
2- Select Application Rules and browse to VirtualBox.EXE
3- Click on Modify.
4- select the Options tab.
5- Deactivate the Content Filtering.

That All Folks!

And everything went fine after.

I have seen something about Outpost Security Suite and Networking Problems in the Forum FAQ. Maybe the forum administrators can add this solution for people who are using OOS on their Host server.

Thanks for the info moody. I will update the FAQ. I use Outpost myself when I'm on Windows (though I plan to dump Windows as Host when Ubuntu 9.04 is released). I always shutdown Outpost when I ran a VM and needed internet, or use the work around on the Outpost Forums, which disables the Webfilter (so no ad-blocking).

Hi Sasquatch,

Yes, I also saw the trick from the Outpost forums but from another web site I saw that you can make this change only for 1 application and not for the entire security.

So that's why I added this trick in the forum so other users of Outpost will be able to manage their internet access in VB without puting a hole in their complete system security.

Glad to see that this trick helped people here!

Hi Pebblez,

Glad to see that i works for you too.

By the way, I have upgraded my Outpost Security Suite to v2009, and since, I do not have to make this manipulation again.

It seems like if Agnitum has done a trick on the Content Filtering.
I have tried it with a complete new configuration of the Outpost Security Suite and even with a complete uninstall/reinstall. I left Content Filtering option for VirtualBox.exe and all is still fine even after the 1 week learning mode. So...

All the best !

Moody, that's why it's learning mode. I never put my firewall in that mode, 'cause I want it to be how I want it, not how it thinks how I want it. It's possible that due to the learning mode, it allowed all traffic, including web content for VB.
