[Solved]Windows Guest Not Picking up Flash Drive

Post by mattig89ch »

Hello everyone,

I have a windows 7 guest install, that isn't picking up the flashdrive I have pugged into my linux host.

Its a Sandisk Cruzer Glide 8GB, formatted with ExFat. I followed the filters off this site, but no change. I have The extension pack, and the guest additions installed, no change.

Host:
Linux Mint 20.3

Guest:
Win 7 64bit, fully activated and running.

I even tried copying and pasting the serial number from the gnome-disk-utility into the filter, with no change.

VBoxManage list usbhost

Just access it as a shared folder. Simpler.

The goal is to give the VM full control of the device. I can't get Ventoy to run on linux (not sure why, its very weird. but that's neither here nor there). So I want to use the VM to run the program. But in order to do that, I need to pass it through to the VM.

You have a couple of good pieces of diagnostic info, but we'll need some more.

Carefully go through USB basics and troubleshooting. If you finish all the steps 1-7 and cannot get your USB device into the guest OS, carefully post the outputs of the commands in step 8 as text, not screenshots. Zip and post the logs step 8 call for, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

Fair enough. Lets go down the list:

I did have it set to USB 2.0. I switched it to 3.0, and installed the correct driver. No change.

I normally use a USB extension cable, with a right angle desk adapter. I tried plugging it directly into the machine. No change.

I re-added my account to the Vbox Admin group, this actually caused a slight change. Prior to that, Linux mounts the drive, and opens the folder. Now it recognizes a USB device was plugged in, but no other change. VM still doesn't recognize it, but the host is no longer auto-mounting it either.

Ha! Ok, so after adding myself to the group I did not restart my computer. After a full restart, the Vm is picking up the flash drive! The host doesn't even mount it, or so it seems. Just passes it right on through.
