Windows 10 VM freezing on Mac

Post by DonVetOne »

Hello all

I have a W10 VM on a MacBook that randomly hangs and becomes non-responsive since VBOX 7.0.6... would appreciate some help since driving me a little nuts!

Thanks!

I gave up trying to get VirtualBox 7.0.x working on Catalina. I suggest the best thing to do for now is to uninstall VirtualBox 7.0.6 (use the uninstall script on the installation .dmg) and install VirtualBox 6.1.42.

Seems better so far if I use HyperV acceleration .... ?

Will try for a few days, if no joy, then uninstall.

Thanks.

Hyper-v acceleration is not available on Macs. But you are no doubt referring to the paravirtualization option, which is simply a language that VirtualBox can use, not a performance setting, and anyway is dictated by the choice of guest OS.

So, is there a correct paravirtualization choice for my W10 VM on a host MacBook?

VirtualBox 7.0.x uses the Apple native virtualization engine. It does not seem to perform very well in Catalina, although it works fine in macOS Ventura, albeit a with a bit more overhead. Since Catalina is now unsupported by Apple, there is not much chance that this will be improved.

As I said earlier, you are probably better to use VirtualBox 6.1.x if you cannot upgrade your Mac beyond macOS Catalina
