Virtualbox 7.0.6 and the VirtualboxGuestAdditions 6.1.42 run perfectly and stably

Post by RonaldMacDonald »

Hi,
as information for those who are looking for a stable variant with Win11 Host and Win11 VM and Virtualbox 7.0.6.
Virtualbox 7.0.6 with VirtualboxGuestAdditions 7.0.6 in Win11 Virtual Machine on a Win11 host operating system does not work at all (VM freezes after a few minutes).
Which has been working for weeks without any problem and absolutely stable (VM runs through and is only stopped by "stand by" of the host Windows 11):
Virtualbox 7.0.6 and the VirtualboxGuestAdditions 6.1.42 run perfectly and stably.

Kind Regards

Ronald

Thanks for the report! It is known that using 6.1.40 or .42 Guest Additions on a 7.0 host VM makes the VM stable, because the new graphics code in 7.0 is not being used.

Unfortunately this also means that the new 7.0 graphics code is not being tested, either. The devs need feedback on bugs to figure out what to fix, so the "use an older GAs version" hack won't be necessary eventually.

It may also be possible that the actual effect of using old GAs is simply preventing use of 7.0's 3D acceleration.

To help the devs, the following is recommended:

Please upgrade to the latest-available Virtualbox, and matching Extension Pack if used, and matching Guest Additions.

If this does not get a stable VM, and you have 3D acceleration turned on, try running the VM with 3D acceleration turned off. If that stabilizes the VM, please note that this happened.

Please create a ticket in the Bugtracker with the problem description, the manufacturer and model of the host PC's graphics card, the graphics driver version (on the host OS), and a (zipped) VBox.log file.

If your host OS is Linux, please provide a zip file with the output of the 'vulkaninfo' command in the Bugtracker ticket, too. (on Debian/Ubuntu/Mint hosts, you may have to install the vulkan-tools package).

Then please feel free to downgrade the Guest Additions or everything to an older working version.

7.0 is out of beta but still in bug-hunt, so the devs need help finding the bugs.
