VirtualBox 7.0 totally breaks graphical output! (Windows 7, Vista and probably others too)

Post by Liz389 »

As the title says, after update to VirtualBox 7.0(.2) the graphical output in Windows 7, Vista and probably others is totally broken, rendering VirtualBox unusable!

All is back to normal after downgrade to version 6.1.40, so this definitely as an extremely serious regression in VirtualBox 7.0 :o

VirtualBox 6.1.40 + Guest Additions 6.1.40
Everything is perfectly fine (please see screenshot in attachment!)

VirtualBox 7.0.2 + Guest Additions 7.0.2
Weird artifacts all over the place, e.g. fonts look garbled and so on (please see screenshot in attachment!); this is hard to capture in a screenshot though, because it also flickers in a strange way!
But the worst things is: the screen goes completely black as soon as I try to actually start an app, requiring a complete reset of the VM :x

VirtualBox 7.0.2 + Guest Additions 6.1.40
Windows desktop manager will crash immediately and fall back to "basic" design (please see screenshot in attachment!)

VirtualBox 7.0.2 + Guest Additions 7.0.2 + "basic" design (no Aero)
No weird artifacts in Windows itself this time, but application window appears completely empty, filled with some grayish color – how is this even possible? (please see screenshot in attachment!)

This all was tested with the exactly same VM, on the exactly same host!

Please see the log files as well as the system specification that I have attached. I had to put these attachments into multiple posts, because you can only put three in each post

Please note also: Quality of screenshots is kind of bad, because file is not allowed to be bigger than 100 KiB, and because I am not allowed to post link to external server, so heavy compression was required *sigh*

Please fix VirtualBox 7.0 to be actually usable :!:

Thank you!

Me too#

I have this on a Linux Host with Ubuntu 22.10, VBOX 7.02 (Universal .run-Version), AMD Radeon RX 550 Grafic and Windows 7 Guest, Guest Additions 7.02.

Disabling 3D it works good, but with a look like classic mode.

Screenshots looks like above examples.

7.0 is just out of beta and will have bugs for some time. Test VMs under 7.0 should be reported here viewforum.php?f=1 in the Stickied "Discuss the 7.0.x Release" topics, where x is the final version number you're using. One problematic VM per post, with a zipped vbox.log posted through the forum's Upload Attachment tab, showing the failed run of the VM, please.

Here is a short video clip that better (hopefully) illustrates the issue:

It was done as suggested. But please note that there was no "failed run of the VM" in the sense that the VM did not start or crashed completely.
The actual problem is that the VM does runs, but the graphics output looks "garbled" or even goes all black

That's enough of a fail to be a "failed run". Thanks for posting this in the Discuss topics.

Experiencing something similar here on Windows 11.

After the upgrade to VBOX 7.02 on a Manjaro host with Intel Haswell integrated graphics, Windows 11 was not booting anymore.

Disabling 3D acceleration made Windows 11 boot again. Then after installation of the guest additions distributed with VBOX 7.02 I tried re-enabling 3D. Now Windows 11 boot, but all the test is unreadable (fonts are garbled).

Hello,

I have a similar problem. My host is Linux Manjaro KDE latest version with VirtualBox 7.02, the guests are Windows 10 x64 and Windows 11 x64, the problem is the same in both guests: when the VM starts using 2 monitors the interface is broken, but if start with just one monitor everything is ok, so virtualbox guest additions 7.0.2 breaks multiple displays.

I have a similar problem. On windows 10 host with windows 10 or 11 guest. With NVIDIA graphics assigned it crashes on boot. With Intel graphics assigned it boots but there are lots of artifacts, parts of the display are a green block. Deselect 3D in Display settings and it seems to work fine but of course some effects such as transparency are not available.

Linux Mint and Zorin OS seem to work fine with 3D selected on either NVIDIA or Intel.

Edit: Updating to v7.04 improved the situation slightly. Both NVIDIA and Intel graphics boot ok. Artifacts seem minimal in a W10 guest but the start menu is totally transparent in W11.

While VirtualBox 7.0.4 is installed and the VM is not running, open a Windows Command Prompt or a Linux shell on your host and enter the following command(s):

Code: Select all

cd "C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox"
VBoxManage setextradata "VM name" "VBoxInternal/Devices/vga/0/Config/VMSVGA10" "0"
Note that the cd command is only needed on Windows hosts, and that the "VM name" should be replaced if your VM has a different name ;).

Please report if your issues persist. To undo the setting, use the following command(s):

Code: Select all

cd "C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox"
VBoxManage setextradata "VM name" "VBoxInternal/Devices/vga/0/Config/VMSVGA10" ""

Than's for the hint. But it is not working

With this setting, Windows 7 will fall back to "Windows 95" graphics mode — with, apparently, no way to enable "modern" (Aero) graphics mode

Also, Windows performance index will fail to update! Please watch attachment!

After this, Windows 7 will start with "modern" (Aero) graphics mode again, but the problems like garbled graphics output or black screen are back too

Code: Select all

VBoxManage setextradata "VM name" "VBoxInternal/Devices/vga/0/Config/VMSVGA10" "0"
It helps, but it does not help. For me: Ubuntu 22.10, VBOX 7.05 (Preview), Windows 7 Home Guest (64 Bit).

Helps, because no breaked Graphics.

Helps not, because now there is no Aero in the Guest. Looks like Classic Mode.
