WIndows XP halt after starting 'Mup.sys'

Post by avsteele »

I have a a working drive with windows XP Pro SP2. If I insert this into a PC it boots up OK. I used this drive and the disk2vhd to create an image. VirtualBox starts the image OK but then appears to halt. On subsequent starts I get the standard Windows menu allowing me to try to boot in Safe Mode. If I select "Safe Mode with Command Prompt" shows it stops after starting "Mup.sys".

I am not sure what the problem is. Any thoughts?

Additional details:
  • The host is Win10 Pro
  • VTx, and VTd are enabled in the hot bios (without these it can't start the machine at all)
  • Other options were left as defaults, except for increasing the ram to 2 GB (to match the original machine)
  • I tried enabling USB 2.0 and installed the extension for this. It halts either way
  • Looking at the performance monitor, I don't think the virtual HDD is doing anything after it appears to halt
  • I attached the logs (Vbox.log, hardening, and .1,.2, and .3 as a zip)
I've tried a few other options but none has altered this behavior.

Thank you very much

We only need one log, zipped.

I have updated the post to have a single attachment with the relevant log files from startup through the 'halt'.

Thank you.

As I said, only one VM log is required - the rest are ignored.

I don't know if this is your problem, but your extension pack version (6.1.36) does not match the software version (6.1.38). These must match. Also, if you have any filters created to capture USB devices, try turning them off.

I think the "mup.sys" problem in safe mode is a red herring.

I wasn't ever able to get this working. I instead started with a fresh WinXP and installed the needed software. Thanks for your help nevertheless mpack!
