[solved] VBox Windows Client is closed automatically

Post by BerndM »

Hello,

I've some problems with my Windows 10 installation in VBox. During Outlook is run the machine is closed and becomes the state canceled.

My PC:
- ASUS Rog Strix H370-I Gaming: 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, i9, NVIDIA GeForce RTX2060 12GB VRAM
- OS: Debian 11 with all patches and NVIDIA graphic driver
- VBox 6.1.38

Windows Guest:
- Windows 10 21H2 installation with all updates
- Office 2021 Professional Plus, Python 3.10.7, Cygwin, Enterprice Architect, Eclipse, G DATA Antivirus, FoxitReader and so on.
- no MS-Konto!!
- GuestAdditional installed
- 8 Cores, 8GB RAM, dynamic VDI with max. 100GB (used at the moment 47GB)
- PAE/NX enabled, Nested VT-x/AMD-V enabled, Hype-V, Nested Paging enabled, VBoxSVGA with 3D 256MB and USB 3.0

If I let the VM run for some time and only have Outlook open, then it aborts and I can restart it. From time to time a repair is made.
Reinstalling everything doesn't change anything.
The pure Windows 10 installation does not show such problems.

Have every one an idea what can I do to dected the couse?

Best regards,
Bernd

What does this mean?

Does this mean Windows 10 without Office 2021 installed? Or Windows 10 with Office installed but not running?

Will the VM abort if Outlook is not started? Will it abort if any other Office app is running?

Start the VM from full normal shutdown, not save-state. Run until you see the problem happen, then shut down the VM from within the VM's OS if possible. If not possible, close the Virtualbox window for the VM with the Power Off option set.

Right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show Log. Save the far left tab's log, zip it, and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

no MS Knto means that the installation and running is without log into the Microsoft Account. The data collection from MS is to big.

The pure Windows 10 installation is without Office 2021 installation.

The abort is the state from VBox. The VM is closed without blue screen or so.
After this I can only new start the VM. I have no saved state.

I#ve saved a log from one VM which are crashed and attached it.

I've read the log files from this VM and see also other informations. So I attached here all available logfiles from this VM. The VBox.log is from the crash today.

VBox.log file wrote:

Similar issues have been reported a few times in the previous years (google "VMSVGA3d: OpenGL error" site:forums.virtualbox.org), but without a resolution so far. Suspected were the graphics driver on the host and graphics settings in the guest.

For a test, see Office Options - The General tab - User Interface options and try When using multiple displays: Optimize for compatibility. Please report back if this makes any difference.

Thanks.

I've tested it on two different PC.
Host 1: Laptop DELL Precission-M6800: i7, 32GB rAM, NVIDIA Quadro K5100M 8GB VRAM, SSD 512GB, OS Windows 10
Host 2: Mainboard AUS Rog Strix H370-I, i12, 32GB RAM, NVIDIA Geforce RTX 2060 12GB VRAM, OS Debian 11, nvidia grafic driver

- all OS with all updates
- VBox Versions: 6.1.34 and 6.1.38 tested
- VM Image in booth Host the same

Test with:
- Host 1 monitor and 2 monitors
- VM with one monitor and 2 monitors

detetcted behaviour:
- Edge Browser Tabs are crashed and can restart
- Edge Browser is close without user action
- MS Teams is closed without user action
- Office 2019 is closed without user action
- Office 2019 and Office 2021 crash the VM
- after crash from the VM I can it restart some times, than Windows repair its system, after the next crashes the VM is never start

In the furture I test it with a new installation of Windows 10 21H2 and Office 2021.

I have also with a other software a problem. The support of this software means that is a USB3 problem. Now I test this problems with a Windows 10 PC, without VM.

I have also installed an Debian 11 VM and I see here with dmesg the following errors but this VM is not crashed or so:

Code: Select all

RETBleed: WARNING: Spectre v2 mitigation leaves CPU vulnerable to RETBleed attacks, data leaks possible!
[drm:vmw_host_log [vmwgfx]] *ERROR* Failed to send host log message.
[drm:vmw_msg_ioctl [vmwgfx]] *ERROR* Failed to open channel.
When use only USB2 bei the Debian 11 VM than are only the first two message in the log.

So that is all what I have see with the VBox at the moment. Now I will test the hints from the last post.

Update of my tests:

Change the configuration from MS Office option for using of more displays activate optimize for compatibility.
Did dosn't solve the problem.

Change the configuration of the VM[ (disable 3D)/u]
* the VM isn't crash
* the problem with the post viewtopic.php?f=2&t=107148 is also solved

OK, that is a verry old problem with the graphic support.
