Unable to turn on sound or audio on Windows guest with Windows host

Post by n-i-c-k »

I am unsuccessfully trying to enable sound/audio on a Windows 10 Pro guest.

As far as I can tell, I have enabled audio for the guest on the host: h t t p s : //ibb.co/KxVYxkZ (I cannot embed the image or post urls as I apparently need to be a member for 1 day and have one post to do so, hence the broken link)

However, on the guest, there is no audio, neither in the taskbar ( h t t p s ://ibb.co/H4JvRd5 ) nor in settings: ( h t t p s://ibb.co/0qTbzD1 ).

The output of VBoxManage showvminfo ... --details on the host is:

I believe the audio template default for Win10 is "Intel HD Audio". Yours appears to be set at AC'97 - why is that?

Incidentally, you can attach images in the same way you attached the log. And you can do this from your first post.

I am not sure why this was the case. I changed it to "Intel HD Audio". After rebooting both host and guest, I now have a "sound symbol" in the taskbar. Yet, there is still no sound - so am not sure what I could change or set now.

FWIW, my Windows 10 21H2 guest OS doesn't have any audio drivers for the ICH AC97 Audio Controller. In consequence, this setting can only be used with 3rd-party audio drivers.

In your guest OS, I'd suggest to go to the Windows Device Manager and check if the Intel HD Audio Controller has drivers installed.

I didn't seem to have this *Intel HD driver* installed.

So, I downloaded a driver from https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en ... 1pa-x.html
(https://downloadmirror.intel.com/30159/ ... 9247.1.zip) and installed it.

After rebooting the guest, this driver still does not show up in the device manager.
