Win10 and Win11 at the same time
Win10 and Win11 at the same time
Since a couple of weeks I can't run an instance of Win10 and Win11 at the same time. The second instance is not routed to the internet, when running them in bridged mode. I do not have this problems with my Linux System within the same virtualbox. Greetings -- Harald I can't attach the two log files from each instance after shutting them down. They are two big. Even when just starting and stopping the windows

Re: Win10 and Win11 at the same time
Was the Win11 created from a clone of the Win10 VM? In any case make sure they have different MAC addresses and host names, otherwise they cannot both be on the same network at the same time.

Thx for your reply

--> The Win11 instance is a very fresh one. Done from the MS Installation Files for Win11.
In any case make sure they have different MAC addresses and host names, otherwise they cannot both be on the same network at the same time.
--> This is clear. Of course, they are different.

Re: Win10 and Win11 at the same time
Zipped logs almost always fit.hjele wrote:I can't attach the two log files from each instance after shutting them down. They are two big.
Let's get some data:
On the host OS, run one of these:
for Windows, open a Command Prompt and run ipconfig /all.
for Mac/Linux, open a Terminal and run ifconfig or ip address.
Post the command output.
For each VM do these:
Right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show in Explorer/Finder/File Manager. Copy the VM's .vbox file (not the .vbox-prev file)to the desktop (Configure your host OS to show all extensions if the folder that opens does not show a .vbox file). Zip all the .vbox files and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.
Start each VM by itself with no other VMs running. Inside the VM, run ipconfig /all. Post the command output.
Shut down the VM from within the VM's OS. Right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show Log. Save the far left tab's log, zip it, and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

Re: Win10 and Win11 at the same time
Everything looks fine. I have no idea why this would happen. If it was a VirtualBox problem, it would happen at a lower level. In your case, the vms can access the local network and get their network config from the DHCP server. This indicates that the VirtualBox bridge software is working as expected.
If you run either vm by itself, does it work OK? What I want to know is whether the problem is with a particular vm, or whether the problem only arises when you have both vms running.
Some corporate and academic networks have checks to limit unknown devices, but these also usually operate at a lower level, as VirtualBox does. I am not aware of any that would allow a device to obtain its config from DHCP but then block some or all of the traffic to or from it.

Re: Win10 and Win11 at the same time
I also didn't see anything wrong in the information provided so far. The Klagenfurt university seems to have a segmented network, with the DHCP and DNS servers in a different subnet, so the DHCP relay(s) may play a role. I'd suggest to reproduce the problem using the following strategy:
In both VM configurations, disconnect the virtual network cables. Start a Wireshark trace on eno1 on your host. Start the first VM, start a Wireshark trace in the guest and connect the virtual network cable (using the VM window's network status icon or menu). Then do the same with the second VM. Try reproducing the problem using ping 8.8.8.8 (without DNS) and ping http://www.google.at (with DNS). If you provide the Wireshark traces, I can help analyzing them.
