Existing win10 as guest system

Post by gernot »

Hi there,
I'm trying to setup a win10 guest VM that uses an already installed win10 system. My environment: win10, Ubuntu 22.10 (both installed on separate disks), dual boot, grub boot manager, VirtualBox 6.1 (6.1.32_Ubuntu r149290). As far as In know this is possible. But when I start the VM, I always get the grub rescue console. Any help appreciated :-)

This would not be unusual, depending on how Grub identifies the drive. If it uses drive UUIDs then it will fail, because all UUIDs changed during the P2V migration. The grub script has to be edited to identify the drive differently, e.g. as sdax instead of by UUID.

And just to be clear, you are talking about a P2V migration right? Not a raw disk boot scenario. In this case note that "raw" can be a misnomer. It means that you bypass the host filesystem and access the drive at sector level, it doesn't mean that the drive isn't still virtual: so hardware IDs still change.
