Problems launching VM with VirtualBox > 6.1.32

Post by Tech Trade »

Same issue for me. With 6.1.32 on Win10Pro host with 32GB RAM - all VMs Windows and Linux crawled so slow that it was completely unusable. After downgrade to 6.1.30 including downgrade of expansion pack, things are running faster than 6.1.32, but not nearly as fast as they used to. I'm using an i9-9900K and dedicating 8 cores and 8GB or RAM to Win10Pro VM and running only one VM at a time - and it is still going fairly slow with video refresh really slow, sound garbled, and mouse lagging quite a bit on the screen. Linux VMs (Ubuntu, Kali, CentOS) also running noticeably slower. HyperV is shut off on the host OS. Host OS and apps running normally. Host and all VMs running on M.2 NVME. Everything ran normally a few months ago. No hardware system changes and no SW installed on system other than Win10 updates and update to VirtualBox SW. No changes to network or Internet speed.

Start the VM from full normal shutdown, not save-state. Run until you see the problem happen, then shut down the VM from within the VM's OS if possible. If not possible, close the Virtualbox window for the VM with the Power Off option set.

Right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show Log. Save the far left tab's log, zip it, and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

Do you have hyper-v enabled? if you do then disable it and try 6.1.32 again, but before this grab the log for 6.1.30 and then when you try 6.1.32 grab another log and post both.

I did just find something out that may be of use to others. Even after I downgraded VirtualBox to 6.1.30, performance on guest VMs was poor. I checked in my Control Panel > Programs and Features that Hyper-V was not enabled. I decided to install VMware Workstation Pro to solve the issue. The VMware installer said that I had either Hyper-V installed or MS Defender App Guard. I went back and checked on the latter and sure enough this feature was on. I forgot that some time ago, I tried to enable this feature to provide protection for the MS Edge browser. As soon as I turn this feature off and rebooted my PC, VirtualBox 6.1.30 performance was back to normal. Hopefully, this post helps others that may have this feature enabled. It would be great if Oracle can fix the issue of this feature causing performance problems.

Good hunting!

One of our tutorials viewtopic.php?f=1&t=62339#p506311 has a mention of the various "guards" getting in the way.

Running Virtualbox under Hyper-V is a challenge, due to Hyper-V's type-1 hypervisor status, which can get in the way of type-2 hypervisors like Virtualbox. The devs have been working on it and continue to do so.
