Windows 10 update fails - probably because of GuestAdditions

Post by Markus N. »

Hi,
I'm trying to update my Windows 10 guest (on Arch Linux host) and constantly get the error code 0x80073701.
When trying to follow the advice in https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/top ... c0ab15f3e0
or https://www.howto-connect.com/clean-sta ... ows-10-pc/,
I get a VirtualBox error, followed by "Guru Meditation error" on restarting Windows (which is part of both described procedures).

I've also tried the Troubleshooting agent found in the Windows settings to no avail.

GuestAdditions are up to date.

Any ideas ?

I had those same errors on my physical PC. The only workaround was to suspend updates for a couple of weeks and it would often work properly when it resumed - for a while. Eventually I upgraded my PC (for other reasons, i.e. it just needed to be updated with an eye on Win11) and I haven't had the problem since. I kept my old PC but wiped it and did a new Win10 install - no reoccurrence of the problem there either.

Note however that we don't deal with guest OS issues here, we only deal with problems with the physical hardware, i.e. the VirtualBox area. So I won't discuss Windows Update any further.

For diagnosis of the the guru meditation you need to provide a zipped VM log from a session including that error. Make sure the VM is fully shut down, then right click it in the manager UI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (no other file) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.
