I don't know how to get USB stick to be seen in 'My Computer'

Post by Peter Linu »

Hiyall,
I am a complete noob (days).
I have Oracle VB sitting on Linux Mint Cinnamon 20.2 host. I have configured a USB stick. When I insert it, the USB's window opens however how do I have the stick seen in 'My Computer'?

We'll need a tad more info:

What OS is the guest?

How did you do this?

On the host OS or the VM's OS?

We'll get to this depending on the answers to the above questions.

One thing: if all you want to do is see the files on the USB stick in the VM, use Virtualbox's Shared Folders, with Guest Additions installed in the VM, to share the USB stick's folder to the VM. See https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch04. ... redfolders Very similar to your only other topic: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=94268

That could have many meanings, as could "My Computer".

If the USB device is recognized by the guest OS, it will appear in the appropriate branch of the guest Device Manager.

What do you mean by "the USB's window"? I'm not aware that USB has a window.

If you're talking about a USB thumb drive, and a file explorer window opens, and you're sure this isn't displayed by the host (try dragging the window outside the VM - if it's a VM window then you can't), then the USB thumb drive has been recognized.

IMG tags are disabled, and they would not show an image stored on your computer's home folder anyway. Attachments work better, like the other images you posted.

If the picture at "/home/peter/Desktop/VB%20usb%20window.png" shows the USB drive appearing on the host OS with the blue window title bar instead of the gray-on-beige Windows 7 window title bar, then the USB drive is not getting into the VM.

This could be because Windows 7 does not have drivers for USB 3. See USB basics and troubleshooting

Note from above:
