New to VM and a little bit stuck..needing some guidance please

Post by Techie_hobby »

Hi All..

I am totally new to this Virtual Box software...

I am wondering if anyone can give me just a little guidance to get the VM working....

I am wanting to use a Windows 10 Pro based VM since I am no good with Linux based programming......

Basically I want to be able to download a couple/few links (nothing illegal) but worried that they may contain some nasty viruses that will destroy my laptop.
So to be on the safe side I would like to run them in VM firstly.. so that I can inspect them for any hidden nasties.

I have been following the Manual... but I cannot see anywhere (unless I have missed it) which explains how to even get Windows to Load up as the VM

Steps I have taken so far..

I have Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager
I have created a New machine - as Windows 10 Pro 64
Created a session
Have a Windows 10 Pro 64 disc in my CD/DVD drive
Tried to install Windows 10 on the VM....

That is as far as I have got and currently at the Blue screen with "Advanced option" since the Reset PC did not work

Once you get the VM booting to the install CD/DVD or ISO file, the installation of the OS runs the same as on a regular PC.

FWIW the default setup of a Windows 10 VM is a bit conservative. In the VM's System settings, Motherboard tab, set regular RAM to 2GB. On the Processor tab, set Processors to 2. On the Display settings set video RAM to 128MB.

You should not have to change anything else.

One thing that will definitely help the VM to install quickly is to "rip" the install DVD to an ISO. Free ISO makers are available on the internet. Or you could stay with the host DVD drive.

If you have issues, please post back. We'll see what we can do.

Thank you for that information...

I have amended the setup as per your suggestions.

In regards to the ISO.. I already have an ISO made but could not work out how to install the VM from the ISO on my PC or better still from a USB stick I created from the ISO, therefore had to revert to the original Win 10 Pro disc...

It does not seem to go through with installation and just takes me to the Repair section....

The ISO sounds like it is a quicker process. could you please assist further with this?
Many thanks

Hi again.

It seems my laptop scrolled too far down the manual for some unknown reason...

I have the Win10 ISO added and now have Win10 running as a VM..

Thank you again for your assistance though..
