VHD starten nicht

Post by 3125 »

Hallo Zusammen,

Please provide a VM log file. Make sure the VM is fully shut down, then right click it in the manager UI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (no other file) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

i have changed under "System / Mainboard" the value of Chipsatz from "PIX3" to "ICH9" ....
now you can see the starting screen of windows xp - and then the system goes into a booting-loop ...

Ah. The files have been stripped of their extensions, which is why I did not recognize their type. You should adjust your Windows host's file browser to not hide file extensions, because that leads the unwary to drop them entirely - and that is a problem.

XP does not support ICH9. The latter chipset was intended for MacOS guests only. PIIX3 is the correct choice for XP. In addition, XP is not plug and play with regard to motherboard features, so changing almost anything on the (virtual) motherboard will cause crashes (the boot loop is just the normal XP processing of a BSOD error).

What you have done is called a "Physical to Virtual Migration", or P2V for short. There are lots of things you need to do to prepare XP for a P2V. Here is a VirtualBox wiki article that describes the steps: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Migrate_Windows. You can ignore what it says about using dd to image the disk - that advice is long obsolete, Disk2VHD is now preferred. Pay particular attention to the instructions on using MergeIDE, as this step is what ensures compatibility with the VirtualBox IDE controller.
