Updates fail to download

Post by VirtualDummy »

Since I moved my Win10 20H1 guest from a Win10 host to Linux Mint 20.1 as host, I have problems with quality updates.
All downloads stop with 0x80070057. On the other hand i can download updates from the catalog and install them sucessfully, e.g the update to 21H1.
All other updates (security, drivers) work.
Drive C uses 85 GB of 209 GB, this can't be the bottle neck, but what else?

Thanks for any idea.

Apparently this happens on real Windows PCs too, web-search "windows update error 0x80070057". The only thing I can think of that could cause a moved VM to start failing is either because the new CPU is causing glitches in the OS (the physical CPU is the only piece of host hardware that the VM sees) or because there was a bit flip etc in the copy process.

To check if ther is any Virtualbox glitches happening, please start the VM from full power off, not save-state. Run until you see the problem happen, then shut down the VM from within the VM OS if possible. If not possible, close the Virtualbox window for the VM with the Power Off option set.

Please right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show Log. Save the far left tab's log, zip the log file, and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

I don't see anything odd in the operation of the VM. You're running the Ubuntu fork of Virtualbox on your host:
00:00:01.616338 VirtualBox VM 6.1.16_Ubuntu r140961 linux.amd64 (Apr 29 2021 15:42:15) release log
which we don't technically support, as it's a fork, but ithis may not be the problem.

You're also running too-new Guest Additions:
00:00:10.113245 VMMDev: Guest Additions information report: Version 6.1.22 r144080 '6.1.22'
The main program will have some kind of problem somewhere communicationg with a plug-in that didn't exist when the main program was complied. But that also may not be causing the problem.

I'd say to try replacing the fork with official 6.1.22 Virtualbox (mind the prerequisites https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch02. ... nux-prereq). This should match the installed GAs. If that does not solve the problem, then it could very well not be caused by Virtualbox, but a VM OS glitch, which I wouldn't know how to solve. Maybe a trip to a Microsoft forum might help.

Hello,

I have the same error.
* Host fedora 34
* guest Windows 10 21H1 fresh install
* Virtualbox & guest addition 6.1.26

Windows 10 can't download updates (error 0x80070057) until I uninstall guest additions.
