VirtualBox 6.1.18 Windows 10 no internet

Post by Bit-tech »

Hi

I updated to VirtualBox 6.1.18 last weekend, and now I have no internet access in my Windows 10.

I'm not overly techie, so will need really basic language please!

Obviously did try fixing in Windows, but no fixes and says the problem could be with the driver, so after much reading, have come here.

Windows 10 settings:

IP settings
IP assignment: Automatic (DHCP)

Properties
Link speed: 1000/1000 Mbps
Manufacturer: Intel
Description: Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Desktop Adapter
Driver Version: 8.4.13.0

VirtualBox Adapter settings:
NAT
Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (82540EM)
Promiscuous Mode: Deny
Cable is connected.

The physical settings are basically the same, except for in Windows 10 it has dashes every two digits.

Edit

I have done the following inside Windows:

services.msc WLAN AutoConfg turned on
turned on network discovery (was off)
disabled ethernet and reset adapters

It's Windows on iMac OS Big Sur

Windows 10 adores two processors, and you have room on your host:
Host CPU status:
00:00:02.735046 CPUM: Physical host cores: 4
Guest CPU settings:
00:00:02.428225 NumCPUs <integer> = 0x0000000000000001 (1)
Please right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show in Explorer/Finder/File Manager. Zip the VM's .vbox file (not the .vbox-prev file), and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab. (Configure your host OS to show all extensions if the folder that opens does not show a .vbox file.)

Also, please run this command in the Mac host terminal and post the text output:

ip address

Run these commands in the Windows VM command prompt, and post the text outputs:

ipconfig /all
ping ip.address.of.Mac

Make sure your Mac's ethernet adapter is allowed to respond to ping for that last Windows command.

Hi scottgus1

ip address (from Terminal)

indigowarrior@Michelles-iMac ~ % ip address
zsh: command not found: ip
indigowarrior@Michelles-iMac ~ %

IP address (from Network in System Preferences)

Wi-Fi has the IP address 192.168.1.12.

Windows

*"Make sure your Mac's ethernet adapter is allowed to respond to ping for that last Windows command." Apologies, I don't know how to do this—I don't have an Ethernet connection, only Wi-Fi has been set up. I can take the PC and connect directly to Ethernet if required*

Try 'ifconfig'. If that doesn't work, web-search how to see the full configuration of the network adapters on the Mac host, including IP addresses.
Bit-tech wrote:Make sure your Mac's ethernet Wi-Fi adapter
My mistake, it was a wi-fi adapter. This is probably handled in the Mac firewall for all adapters.

 Should have explained more clearly. You were supposed to replace 'ip.address.of.Mac' with something related to the ip address of the Mac, like "ping 192.168.1.12".

You do have the correct network adapter in the VM, and it is set to NAT, which is theoretically the easiest to set up:
the .vbox file wrote: <Network>
<Adapter slot="0" enabled="true" MACAddress="080027CDFF67" cable="true" type="82540EM">
<NAT/>

If this is all you get for 'ipconfig /all' in the VM then something is really wrong inside the VM. Was there more in the window, describing an Ethernet adapter, like this from my Windows host?
C:\Users\SnC>ipconfig /all

Hi scottgus1

Told you I wasn’t that tech

That was definitely all I had for ipconfig /all.

I’ll do the ping properly and other items tonight and repost.

Sounds good. Also check the Windows OS's Device Manager, to see if the network adapter is not starting or is missing a driver. (It shouldn't, the card chosen by Virtualbox for this VM is the default, and Windows should have drivers for the card.)

Thanks, so far all as expected, considering the problem. Please check the Windows OS's Device Manager, to see if the VM's Intel network adapter is not starting or is missing a driver. (It shouldn't, the card chosen by Virtualbox for this VM is the default, and Windows should have drivers for the card.)

Intel(R) Pro/1000 MT Desktop Adapter

Device Status: "This device is working properly."

Did try the 'update driver', but it won't as I'm not connected to the internet.

"search automatically for drivers" The best drivers for your device are already installed. Windows has determined that the best driver for this device is already installed. There may be better drivers on Windows Update or on the device manufacturer's website

I had a same problem with DHCP Lease.

Try:

Code: Select all

ipconfig /release
and then

Code: Select all

ipconfig /renew

Hi

Thank you for posting, I already did this a couple of months back. It comes up that I have no adapter.

Added a new adapter 'Internal Network', set promiscuous mode to Allow VMs, then did a reset PC in Windows (kept files, deleted installed software).

That [solved] sounds like you got things going again! Great!

FWIW a mere upgrade of Virtualbox does not normally cause the kind of problem you had, where the VM OS does not recognize the adapter, even though Device Manager says it's working. Must have been a cosmic ray or a bit-flip. Curious that a 'reset PC' got you going. That's practically an OS reinstall, indicating the VM OS was glitched.
