Win 10 on VM no longer working after Windows-Update

Post by Fortvilet »

Hi,

I have been using VM with Win 10 for a while (some few years) and except for some problems here and then it did work quite well.

Now I have come to a problem I am not able to solve on my own :-(. Perhaps someone could give me a hint how to fix it - please?

I have been using VM as late as today trying to narrow the reason for a browserrelated issue on my host-system. After sucessfully using WIN as guest on VM 3 changes were made to my host-system (win 10 20H2, build 19042.685):

1. Windows Update: Installing KB4592438
2. Activating Microsoft Defender Application Guard (via "windows features")
3. Activating Ransomware-Protection in Windows 10 (via security...)

After this changes I found out I could no longer start win 10 as a guest-system within VM. When I try to start the guest-system it will hang while booting - permanently just showing Windows classic black bootscreen and the greenblue windows icon. I do not get any error message - neither by VM nor Window's bootprocess, Windows just freezes.

I have reverted the second and the third of the mentioned changes above. I have not been able to uninstall the Windows Update. I have tried to reset the system by windows system restoration forth and back again - without effect. I found out "Hyper-V" was not activated within "windows features" - and changed this (I do not know for sure whether it had been activated before I made the mentioned changes (1,2. and 3.) but I read that "Hyper-V" should be essential for VM to work). Also this did not solve the problem. I checked Hyper VT-x and VT-d were activated in BIOS. I uninstalled and reinstalled VM 6.1.16 r140961 - all in vain.

So now I am quite frustrated and at loose ends. The last sentences in the "VBox.log" are:

00:00:10.386983 TM: Host/VM is not suitable for using TSC mode 'RealTscOffset', request to change TSC mode ignored
00:00:10.387076 GIM0: HyperV: Enabled APIC-assist page at 0x000000000000d000

I attach the whole log.

Many, many thanks for any help!

Windows update - on the host or the guest?

If the host, just reinstall VirtualBox and disable Hyper-v.

Related (especially post #3) FAQ: I have a 64bit host, but can't install 64bit guests.

Hi MPack,

thanks for your help! Sorry, I was not clear: The update took place on the host system.

You were right! Hyper-V in Windows Host must be deactivated, not activated! After I met the troubles with the guest system not starting I read somewhere that "Hyper-V" had to be activated, but it has not! By activating I worsened the original (unkown) problem. I guess the original problem is connected to me either activating "Microsoft Defender Application Guard" or "Ransomware-Protection" (both on host).

To help others who may come across the same problem in future: The attachment shows what it should look like.

THANKS :!: Have a good time :!:

Hi,
i have the same issue, and i haven't found a solution yet.
i think i have your same config, until jan 2 my virtual machine was working and now it is constantly in 'not responding' mode.
the only update i did after jan 2 is the following: kb4592438

can it be that this update broke something?

i see that also other posts are saying problem can be due to hyper-v, but i have windows 10 home which shouldn't have this feature at all

UPDATE: i was able to re-run the virtual machine, sequentially:
* i disabled bitdefender ransomware (no outcome, that actually i was activating recently)
* i uninstalled bitdefender (no outcome, still freeze)
* i created a new virtual machine configuration, using then the same virtual hard drive (it runs now, so perhaps 'something' on the folder was 'done')
--> my problem seems not related to display drivers nor to windows update.
at least one step forward, i'll do other checks

@SZVBox

Windows 10 Home doesn't have 'full' Hyper-V, but does contain a 'core' Hyper-V architecture which enables 'Home' users to use some Hyper-V supported features, such as WSL2, so if you've ever used any of those features you are likely to experience the same problems as full Hyper-V users when running 3rd-Party Virtualisation software and need to follow the guide mpack has directed you to.

Hi,
I had the same trouble with 20H2 update in guest installation.
Very slow system and blue screens in guest system.

Before, a virus on my host removed the Windows Defender and while trying to restore him I also installed the
Microsoft Defender Application Guard (via "windows features").
BTW, the only way to get Defender back (after virus was removed) was to apply a foreced 20H2 update to the host.

The problem with my guest system was solved after deinstallation of the windows feature Microsoft Defender Application Guard.
Thanks :D
