Windows 11 guest with windows 11 host

Post by Pein »

My windows 11 guest crashes all over the place. It seems to hang not long after logging in. I have 4gb ram an 128db disk and 2 processors allocated to it with tpm passthtru and secure boot enabled. I am running the latest vb 7.04 but I am unable to update the guest additions from 7.02 to 7.04. My laptop is a dell with 16gb ram and corei7 and 1tb ssd. On the host all the latest updates are run but on the guest I'm not sure. On the guest the vm terminates when trying to do a windows update. The guest hasn't been activated yet and it looks like it doesn't want to activate online. It looks like I'll have to phone microsoft to activate it.

Please provide a VM log file. Make sure the VM is fully shut down, then right click it in the manager UI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (no other file) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

How do I add attachments? I don't see any link or button that allows me to upload a file?

You might try removing the 7.0.2 Guest Additions, to see if the VM returns to stable operation. The graphics will be limited, but if the VM stays up, then you could try 7.0.4's Guest Additions and see what happens.

Bill's link recommends disabling host Hyper-V. Your VM has the two processors which has been recently known to allow some VMs to run ok under active host Hyper-V. But if the Guest Additions tests don't help, see HMR3Init: Attempting fall back to NEM (Hyper-V is active)

Here are 2 screenshots to prove that I am NOT running the windows 11 hypervisor.

Here are all the log files I got. I hope it's not too much to digest. The vm hangs about 5 minutes after logon.

The VBox.log shows:
00:00:06.619254 ********************* End of CFGM dump **********************
00:00:06.619455 HM: HMR3Init: Attempting fall back to NEM: VT-x is not available
00:00:06.657942 NEM: info: Found optional import WinHvPlatform.dll!WHvQueryGpaRangeDirtyBitmap.

00:00:06.657973 NEM: info: Found optional import vid.dll!VidGetPartitionProperty.
00:00:06.658040 NEM: WHvCapabilityCodeHypervisorPresent is TRUE, so this might work...
and
0:00:06.660622 NEM: NEMR3Init: Snail execution mode is active!
00:00:06.660622 NEM: Note! VirtualBox is not able to run at its full potential in this execution mode.
00:00:06.660622 NEM: To see VirtualBox run at max speed you need to disable all Windows features
00:00:06.660622 NEM: making use of Hyper-V. That is a moving target, so google how and carefully
00:00:06.660622 NEM: consider the consequences of disabling these features.
The Hyper-V (Virtualisation) Platform isn't the only feature that makes use of Hyper-V and the fact that that feature is not ticked doesn't mean that other features are not using the Hyper-V 'engine' especially as Microsoft now enables some security features by default in Windows 11 that make use of Hyper-V/VTx.

For further testing, you need to revisit the advice in the linked guide pointed out by scottgus1 in the earlier post and make sure all features using Hyper-V/VTx have been disabled. The Green Turtle icon amongst the VirtualBox icons at the bottom of the VM screen will convert to a blue 'V' icon if you have successfully disable all interfering Windows 11 features.

Hint: Check the "Core Isolation" settings screen in the Windows 11 Host Settings and; if it is enabled, the disable it.

If you actually read the tutorial (you did read it, did you? I sure hope I didn't waste my time posting it for you to just go ignore it) you'd see that the Windows Features screenshots are worthless, because Hyper-V gets enabled by more than those checkboxes.

Let's see if you won't ignore MultiOS's instructions above.

I followed all the instructions to remove the windows 11 hypervisor except disabling the registry entry. There was no such registry entry. I still had the same problems though. After removing the guest additions 7.02 it ran perfectly. I installed guest additions 7.04 and the problems were back. I removed guest additions 7.04 and it was running perfectly again. Why does my windows hang when running guest additions? Is it ok to run it without guest additions? Do you think I made a mistake when disabling hypervisor?

Even though I followed all the instructions to remove the hypervisor, the only change I could notice was the switching off of core isolation. Like I said in my previous post there was no such registry entry. Please read me previous post as well.

The aim is not to remove the Windows hypervisor, but to prevent it from loading. As the tutorial we all keep referring to makes clear, the important thing about the Windows hypervisor is that, if your other changes have not done what is required (as your most recent log shows) you need to use the bcdedit command to prevent it from loading. No matter what Windows Hyper-V features are enabled, they will have no effect if the hypervisor is not loaded.

If this vm ran successfully under 6.1.40, you can always uninstall Version 7 of VirtualBox and install 6.1.40 again. If you do, I would also uninstall the v7 GAs from the guest first, then re-install the 6.1.40 GAs when you are back on 6.1.40 .
