Windows 10 VM full screen issue

Post by lightsky »

Hi Everyone,

I have recently installed Win 10 on VM and when I try to maximize it, it is not coming to full screen.
I tried installing the Guest Addition CD image and running VboxAdditions.exe file, but for some reason, I'm still facing the issue.
I watched a couple of videos as well but was unable to fix this issue.
Can someone please suggest to me how to fix this?
Thanks.

Please provide a VM log file. Make sure the VM is fully shut down, then right click it in the manager UI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (no other file) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

Hi there,
I have shut down the VM and have attached the VM log file.

Let me know if anything else is required.
Thanks.

The log shows a VM started from a saved state - but you were asked to ensure that it was fully shut down.

Hi there,

The VM was in a shutdown state when I captured the logs.
I'm sending you the log file and VM state as well.

Please let me know if anything else is required.

Hi there,

Just wondering if you have checked the logs and found any issues.

I know it might sound crazy, but I'm actually working on a project and need to fix this issue asap.

Thanks.

I don't see any evidence in the Log that the Guest Additions have actually been installed in your Windows 10 Guest, which is probably your main problem at this stage.

Other things to consider in addition to installing Guest Additions in the VM:
- Increase the CPU allocation from 1 to 2 for a 64-bit Windows 10 VM.
- Turn on 3D (but disable 'Transparency Effects' in Windows 10 settings if there are any display glitches with 3D enabled)
- With 3D enabled it should be possible to further increase the Video RAM to 256 MB (if you intend to run at higher resolutions in full screen mode).

Hi there,

I did install the package and I have attached the ss below.

Can you please refer to it and let me know your thoughts?
I can also try the remaining steps you mentioned in the post.

Some misunderstanding on your part I think: The Extension Pack (to be installed on the Host PC) and Guest Additions (to be installed in Guest Virtual Machine) are two completely different things!

Please see the VirtualBox Guide by clicking on Help > Contents in the VirtualBox Manager Interface for detailed descriptions.

Hi there,

Sorry I was confused.
I have installed the latest extension pack from the host and also the guest additions pack in the VM.
For the guest additions, I clicked on devices -> insert guest additions cd image -> open file explorer -> open cdrom > execute vbox.amd64.exe file. **This process is within VM**

So far nothing has improved, I have attached the VM log, VM state capture, and installation screenshot of guest additions.
Guest additions have been installed multiple times, but still no change.

As you mentioned in a previous post, I have increase CPU to 2 and enabled 3d mode, still no change.

In the manager, try going to File|Preferences|General|Display and change the Maximum Guest Screen Size to None. Let's see if that prevents those display sizes from being rejected.

I also notice that all of the display sizes it attempts are 4:3, whereas I assume your physical host monitor is 16:9 or so. I would first get the VM used to the widescreen ratio by choosing one in the View|Virtual screen 1|Resize to www x hhh menu items. Then restart the VM a couple of times, then try switching to full screen mode.

Hi there,

Thanks for the response.
So basically you suggested 2 approaches.

Approach 1 : File > preferences > display > max guest screen = none. // This did work, but when I re-launched(after reboot), it did not work.

Approach 2: View > Virtual Screen1 > resize to hhh x www. I have set this to 1920 x 1080. Then restarted the machine twice and it did work.

Thanks for your help.
