Virtual Disk CD ROM Hangs System

Post by DonVetOne »

Hello all

Anyone know why a windows XP system on boot will stop hanging and get going when I remove the virtual disk from the CD?

I assume that "stop hanging" actually means "hangs", not "why does XP no longer hang".

I imagine it's because the VM tries to boot from the CD, and probably it doesn't have a complete boot config.

The system hangs some time after boot up (it seems while trying to access the local network)... if I then remove the virtual CD in the menu at the bottom right, then the system continues from the 'paused' state.

Perhaps a VM log would cast light on the problem.

I asked for one log, why is there two?

Neither shows a VM attempting to boot from CD, nor any hesitation related to the CD.

One of the logs shows an audio problem of some kind. I.e.
00:01:10.059074 DSound: Error enumeration capture device 'Primary Sound Capture Driver', rc=VERR_GENERAL_FAILURE
00:01:10.258988 DSound: Error enumeration capture device 'Primary Sound Capture Driver', rc=VERR_GENERAL_FAILURE
00:01:10.411249 DSound: Error enumeration capture device 'Primary Sound Capture Driver', rc=VERR_GENERAL_FAILURE
00:01:10.495688 DSound: Error enumeration capture device 'Primary Sound Capture Driver', rc=VERR_GENERAL_FAILURE
00:01:10.628364 DSound: Error enumeration capture device 'Primary Sound Capture Driver', rc=VERR_GENERAL_FAILURE
... repeated many times more.
Try disabling audio as a test.

I believe this topic is a continuation of this one: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=103065 where DonVetOne's XP VM is already installed and running and is hanging when trying to access "My Network Places" in XP.

DonVetOne appears to have discovered that the hang in "My Network Places" occurs when there is a CD in the VM's CD drive.

DonVetOne, maybe these things will help diagnose this:

First, FWIW, the Virtualbox environment does not seem to "hang" in either of the logs. So the "hang" is apparently within XP.

What is the CD or ISO the VM has loaded? Is it a physical CD in the host's CD drive? Does this happen with any CD/ISO or only one?

Please try another log. Set the VM CD drive in the state that will cause this problem. Start a stopwatch at the same instant you start the VM.
Run the VM until the "hang" starts, and note the stopwatch time.
Remove the CD and note the stopwatch time.
Shut down the VM with XP's Shut Down button.
Post the log and the stopwatch times.

If there is no CD or ISO, does the VM OS hang

YES

ISO is VBoxGuestAdditions.ISO

Will get to this a little later... :D
