[Fixed] Windows 10 VM Crashes on Shutdown

Post by bmfesta2009 »

As the title says, I have not seen one successful shutdown. I have attached logs.

I have seen several instances of my VMs getting aborted, nothing recipe-repeatable yet, it seems random... I'll try to keep on looking for a consistently reproducible scenario.

PS. For future reference you should ZIP your logs. It helps you, it helps us, it helps the server, it helps save a (virtual) tree or two... ;)

I'm afraid I just dropped by to report the exact same conundrum. I've tried to isolate my workflow down to single tasks where possible and small batches of closely related ones in the alternative to see if it could be traced back to one of them, but all to no avail. On the upshot, while it's running it is literally smooth as butter; whatever was tweaked regarding the audio subsystem is golden, for the first time ever I can tax the system as hard as necessary and audio playback is thoroughly unaffected. My hat's off to you on that one, that has the experience of bare metal vs. VM pretty much indistinguishable for me. :D

@socratis (nice nick, BTW), care to compare hardware so we can rule that out as well? I'm a Lenovo diehard going back to the IBM days so I never discount the possibility that some similarity of configuration even between different model lines could be in play. Here's my two main chariots:
  • ThinkPadT420s, Kubuntu 19.10, KDE Plasma 5.17.0, KDE Frameworks 5.62.0, Qt 5.12.4, Kernel Version 5.3.0-18-generic, OS Type: 64-bit, Intel® Core™ i7-2620M Quad Core CPU @ 2.70GHz, 16GiB RAM, NVIDIA NVS 4200M Discrete Graphics, Samsung EVO 850 1TB mSATA SSD
  • ThinkServer TS140, Kubuntu 19.10, KDE Plasma 5.17.0, KDE Frameworks 5.62.0, Qt 5.12.4, Kernel Version 5.3.0-18-generic, OS Type: 64-bit, Intel Xeon Processor E3-1226 (3.30 GHz), 16GiB RAM, Radeon HD 7770, Samsung EVO 850 1TB mSATA SSD
If you guys want a log, let me know, I promise to LZMA it first. :mrgreen:

Thanks, but it's not a nick, it's my actual name... ;)

Can you both (in this thread, 3 if you include me) do me a favor and see if the VMs that are shutdown have 3D acceleration enabled? I was told that I should investigate that option...

So the simple answer is yes 3D acceleration is enabled. The long answer is, I have attached my configuration file (zipped for your convenience)

Just to add more host system context:

@bmfesta2009
Yes, 3D acceleration is enabled.
<Display VRAMSize="256" monitorCount="2" accelerate3D="true" accelerate2DVideo="true"/>
The question is: does the VM end up in the "Aborted" state if you disable 3D?

Hi bmfesta2009, (and others)

Crashes on shutdown has been fixed (at least for me), by using a newer beta, the issue was caused by the original beta's guest additions, discovered by testing (the then current) 6.0.12 GA with that beta.

According to your log file, you are still running the original VirtualBox VM 6.1.0_BETA1 r133315. Please test with a newer beta, download from the Test builds page Development snapshots. Thank you!

PS: As an aside, from your Brookdale Desktop.vbox noticed the following... Any reason for not using 8192?

Code: Select all

<Memory RAMSize="8000"/>

@Dave B

Memory question was for no reason other than I change values from time to time depending on the number of simultaneous guests I have running.

Next statement, upgrading to 134041 has in fact fixed my issue for shutting and retaining state after shutdown. Unfortunately it still has not fixed my VBoxSVGA video issues, but those existed in 6.0 as well so I will leave it as that video driver isn't ready yet.

Thank you.

Same here actually. I think I'm going to mark this as [Fixed].

Are you doing a Saved-State shutdown? Are you reverting to a previous Saved-State? Can you explain that part?
