Frequent random crash (panic) with 6.1.0 Beta

Post by wordsmithereens »

Running several VMs (Windows 10-1903, OpenSUSE 15.1 Leap, Kali Linux, Windows 7) on MacOS 10.14.6 Host.

When starting any one of the above guest VMs, but not consistently, I get a kernel panic and system reboots. Next attempt on same or different guest OS may work or may crash.

Other than the panics when starting a VirtualBox VM, system runs very well, often for weeks ata time

MacPro5,1
128 GB RAM 12-core 3.46ghz Xeon
Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 580 8 GB video
MacOS Mojave - all updates current

Here's the latest panic report:

There are no crashes with the latest 6.0.12, only with 6.1.0b1? In other words, is this a regression or not?

The 6.0.12 also crashed/panicked, but less frequently.

Then why did you chose to focus on the beta, to make things even more complicated? :)

Generally, newer software fixes bugs or issues from previous versions. I used the previous version only briefly, but enough to see the pattern.

I guess I could go back to the previous version ad let that one panic and crash and I'll report that too, but ... seems like that would complicate things more. 8)

Not really. There are fixes, but there are regressions too. See "Known Issues" for example and walk your way backwards...

Especially in new major updates, like from 6.0.x to 6.1.0beta, expect more regressions than fixes. It's the nature of the game; new features, new code, new bugs...

There are already several threads that deal with kernel panics in the "OSX Hosts" section. See if anything matches your crash pattern. And yes, post there too, but only if you've switched back to 6.0.12/6.0.13...

Looked at the items you referenced. Nothing jumps out as being a cause for the situation I've been seeing, so I'll see how the next Beta goes.

Thanks!

Hi,

we still don't know what causes the crashes, but now have a suspect. You can run the following to disable the potential culprit:

Code: Select all

 VBoxManage setextradata global GUI/HidLedsSync 0
If the setting was applied properly, it should be visible in VBox.log where the entry "GUI: HID LEDs sync is enabled" should change to "disabled".
It would be great to know if this has any effect. If it avoids the crashes then it might take a while to confirm, but if it doesn't I guess we will know pretty soon.

Thank you. At the office now, but will run that when I get home, and test over the weekend.

4 out of 5 attempts were successful, so far.

OpenSUSE worked, then Windows 10 caused a panic, then Win 10 worked , Kali, Windows again.

Here's the Windows panic:

Code: Select all

Re: Frequent random crash (panic) with 6.1.0 Beta

Post by wordsmithereens »

Early days on the testing, but I think I may have a lead on this issue.

Reducing the memory from 16384 to 8192 has tentatively stopped the kernel panics on two of the hosts - Windows 10 and Kali. Have not tested the others yet.

I think it's high time that we see a VBox.log...

We need to see a complete VBox.log, from a complete VM run, where the problem occurs:
  • Start the VM from cold-boot (not from a paused or saved state) / Observe or recreate the problem / Shutdown the VM (force close it if you have to).
  • With the VM completely shut down (not paused or saved), right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager and select "Show Log".
  • Save only the first "VBox.log", ZIP it and attach it to your response. See the "Upload attachment" tab below the reply form.

Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Here ya go. Took 3 tries this time, which, sad to say, is better than some days ... :)

Thanks!

Did the logs show anything helpful?

Thanks!
