snapshot menu in Machine ?

Post by stes »

Remark on the GUI in VirtualBox 6.0.0r3 (may be an old issue).

Currently I use the 'snapshot' GUI by left mouse click on the machine name, then a menu pops up "Details, Snapshots and Logs".

If you right mouse click on the machine name, or go to "Machines" in the window menu, there's only "Settings..." (corresponding with Details) and "Show log ..." like "Logs" but there's no "Snapshots" menu ...

It would be a good idea perhaps to also provide a "Snapshots..." management menu item in the Machines menu.

Minor detail: Settings and Details are not the same. The "Settings..." in the menu corresponds to the Settings button in the toolbar.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

Hopefully I can piggyback on this post without hijacking it - in the Betas and RC1 I don't even have a snapshot option anymore. I thought this was just a feature which wasn't enabled for the moment but now that we're in RC there's obviously something wrong - has it been moved? I've looked through all the context menus again and again and can't find it :(

If you click and select a VM in the left hand side of the VirtualBox Manager, a menu-like image appears:
  • Image
Click on that and you'll see the Snapshots entry...

Wow, that's the one spot I didn't try with all my left- and right-clicking all over the UI  Thanks!

Re: [Resolved] snapshot menu in Machine ?

Post by stes »

Not Resolved in 6.0.0 RC1

The request is not where to find the Snapshots menu entry.

As I wrote:
Currently I use the 'snapshot' GUI by left mouse click on the machine name, then a menu pops up "Details, Snapshots and Logs".
The answer is not
If you click and select a VM in the left hand side of the VirtualBox Manager, a menu-like image appears:
because that is the same "menu like image with "Details, Snapshots and Logs" that I was referring to.

The request is to add the "Snapshots..." entry to the Machines menu.

I can find (well hidden but it is present) a snapshot menu. The request is to add it to the Machines menu.

I can understand
I've looked through all the context menus again and again and can't find it
because although I did find the menu Snapshots, my remark is that I don't like the location where it is hidden right now.

Mea culpa, I got confused. Resolution removed from the thread title.

OK thanks the terminology "Resolved" does not apply to a suggestion like mine.

I can understand that the GUI developer at VirtualBox disagrees with me and thinks that it's a good GUI,
but as a user of the product I can only say that it is not so easy to see the "context-sensitive" changes in the menu.

The menu that I get on Solaris (GNOME3 desktop) by left-mouse click says "Details, Snapshots,Logs".

If you click on Details then the top window menu changes to "File, Machine, Help".
If you click on Snapshots then the top window menu changes to "File, Machine, Snapshot, Help".
And if you click on Logs then the top window menu changes to "File, Machine, Log , Help".

Personally I'd prefer that the top window menu is always "File, Machine, Snapshot, Log, Help" so that these can always be found from the menu bar in the "Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager".

Also in the window that I get by "Show" (running the vm guest) the top level menu is File, Machine, View, Input , Devices, Help.

Could be useful as well to have "Snapshots" there as well.

Anyway, my suggestion may be "rejected" by the GUI developer of VirtualBox who may disagree with me on this, but "Resolved" is not the right terminology as for me this issue is not "resolved".

It would be better to mark the issue then as "not a bug" or "feature by design" if the developer of VirtualBox considers it a feature that the menu is "context sensitive".

Excuse me, but... what are you talking about? Who's disagreeing with you? What developer are you referring to? I think you got more confused than I did!

I got sidetracked by the post of "unityofsaints" and when I presented him with the solution to his question (which had absolutely nothing to do with your suggestion), I erroneously marked the thread as Resolved. A quick note would have been enough to alert me to my misunderstanding and remedy the situation. Which I did.

But I don't see anyone disagreeing with you, where do you see that?

Let's hope that the Snapshot menu somehow appears in a conventient location.

Personally I think's it not easy to find right now, and not in a convenient location.

Let's hope they can put in a location where it is more easy to find.

By "they", I refer to the VirtualBox developers.
