Reboot doesn't reset Guest memory usage

Post by birdie »

I've been always thinking that Virtual Machines allocate host RAM dynamically whenever the guest OS requests it.

However I've noticed that when you restart/reboot your guest, VirtualBox process memory usage doesn't change at all.

I'd like to hear what VirtualBox developers think in this regard.

The Beta forum is not the right forum for such questions. VirtualBox allocates guest memory on demand but as soon as the guest touches (virtualized) physical memory, the allocation to this VM is permanent until the end of the VM process.

What's the right place then? We're talking about a bug report here. I'm not talking out of curiosity or idle interest.

Isn't reboot/restart the [temporary] end of the VM process?

From your point that's a bug report but from our point that's a feature request. And the Beta forum is not the right place because this behavior didn't change for a long time. You might want to open a ticket at www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Bugtracker.
