Heads up about OSX 10.11 DP

Post by loukingjr »

I didn't want to double post but it affects VB 5.0 RC1 so just linking to the original.

I doubt that there will be any fixes for OSX 10.11 in 5.0, in particular no fixes which would require switching to completely different 3D APIs.

I think I found another issue with OSX 10.11 DP and VirtualBox.

To test a users issue I finally unboxed my Superdrive. Plugged it into the iMac I have OSX 10.11 installed on. I couldn't get any guest to recognize it, and when I tried to create a USB filter I got a no device attached message. Tried the same thing with my MacBook which still has OSX 10.10.3 installed and had no trouble mounting the Superdrive.

blah.

For whatever reason no USB devices are listed in VirtualBox 5.0 RC1 if I'm running OSX 10.11 except my Facetime camera for some reason. I have three USB HDs and a SuperDrive. I guess it's going to be awhile before VB and OSX 10.11 play nice. :(

FWIW, apparently USB has become dysfunctional for VMWare Fusion as well.

Okay. Now I have OSX 10.11 Beta2 installed and can't install VB 5.0 RC1 or RC2 even with SIP disabled. I can install VB 4.3.28.

Looks like the fix in RC2 was not sufficient. VBox 4.3.x might be white-listed by Apple.

maybe but I do have SIP disabled. When I did that with RC1 it did install when I was on OSX 10.11 b1. Now that I've updated to OSX 10.11 b2 neither will install.

so it goes. :)

It would be helpful if you found out why the installation failed. The information is in the system logs and should be visible in the Console app. The 20 or so messages (in the "All Messages" list) right before "The Installer encountered an error" are the interesting ones.

Yes, thanks. This is the same problem we're seeing here but it's odd enough that I wanted to make certain you got the same thing.

As you sort of discovered, this problem isn't SIP related, or at least not directly (which is why turning off SIP doesn't help). It appears to be caused by a difference between VirtualBox 4.3 and 5.0, plus Apple changing something in the 10.11 kernel.

Welcome. I'm back from a nap. As you can see I was up much too early. :D

I suppose some of the kernel changes could be related to SIP. I'm sure it will be sorted out. :)

The problem is now fixed, doesn't appear to be SIP-related at all (but rather VirtualBox 4.3 and 5.0 seeing different kernel symbols). The issue with USB devices not being seen remains, and is unrelated.
