Web camera passthough limitation: only 1 guest

Post by Technologov »

Host: Win 7 x64, VBox 5.0.0-BETA1
Guests: WinXP (x2)

With "Web camera passthough", I have a limitation: it only works with 1 VM.
If other VM accesses the same webcam, it gets nothing. "white picture".

Because webcam is a read-only device, I think it should be possible to lift this limitation.

Was that ever possible? Even with RO devices? Like CDRs?

No it was not. I don't even know how you could do this as passthrough which as I understand it is one-to-one. Only shared resources can do this.

Every webcam I saw for quite some time wasn't read-only, they all had some kind of control channel for exposure, resolution, focus etc.

Besides which, the nature of the device is connection based, i.e. streaming implies a long lasting and possibly I/O intensive connection.
