On a Mac host, just as with all versions of VB I have to create a USB filter for the device and plug it in after the guest Is open. Windows 10 as a guest mounts the device using either the USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 controller.

I don't have Windows 10 installed as a guest on my Linux or Windows boxes so I can't check those.

Looks like a duplicate of "USB hard disks not recognized by Win7 guest" (link)

I have used Virtual Box for many years and this worked on VM 4 3 22 with Windows 8.1 as host

USB hard drives as opposed to flash drives might be more of a "resources" / "band width" issue perhaps , with VBox

maybe there is a language problem. however, I have a Windows 8.1 machine with VB 4.3.26 installed and I will see if ANY guests mount a USB Flash Drive without a filter. be back. :)

well one reason would be because it would work without one.

I just checked my Win8.1 box and without any USB filter I can mount USB Flash drives from the usb menu. at least with Linux guests

FWIW, No guest I have installed whether it is Windows or Linux shows any USB Flash Drive that is already mounted in my OSX, Linux or Windows hosts. Never has.

I can however mount them without a USB filter pre-configured through the VB Menu>USB with VB 4.3.26 & 5.0 beta 1.

However, I cannot mount a USB flash drive on my OSX hosts without a pre-configured USB filter and even then not untill the guest is started and then plug it in with any version of VirtualBox.

Now I'm off to re-learn English. :)
