Wrong path for VM Images

Post by lumks »

the vm images are right now always in "/home/$USER/VirtualBox VMs". a better location would be "/home/$USER/.local/share/VirtualBox VMs". this would be similar to all other apps, who lays down own data on the user directory (steam).

for my setup - i mount my secound HDD to ~/.local/share for bigger datas, so that my /home can stay on the SDD but thats only me.

after all the base user directory is the wrong place for it, look at the xdg standards (cant post links right now)
$XDG_DATA_HOME defines the base directory relative to which user specific data files should be stored. If $XDG_DATA_HOME is either not set or empty, a default equal to $HOME/.local/share should be used.

The ~/.local/share directory is meant for temporary data.

My VMs are certainly not temporary.

I agree with birdie. And this change is not new. The "VirtualBox VMs" directory was introduced with VirtualBox 4.0, more than 4 years ago :-)
