[Fixed] Sending a VM to background

Post by birdie »

May we suggest new features for VirtualBox 5.0?

I for one have always wanted to have this feature: when you close a VM you have an option to send it to background, so it will be running even after the user has closed all VBox windows.

It would be even better if VBox retained a running VM even after the user logged off.

Thank you.

I have written an unofficial patch back in 2011, but Oracle didn't want to include it. This can work on Windows and Linux hosts, with any single-monitor guest.
You can right click on VM on "VirtualBox Manager" and choose "hide" on the menu. Double click on VM again will make it appear.

Maybe I will update the patch and re-submit for a new review.

My patch has a number of limitations:
-Multi-monitor guests not supported
-Mac OS X hosts not supported
-It can't survive user log-out. (will kill hidden VMs)

I also feel we need this feature.
