Mac OS X guest doesn't work in v3.2 !
host: 64-bit fedora 12, core i5-750, vbox puel 3.2.0b1
i've tried the wizard to create a macosx guest and i've also tried the below manual setup and i just get to the purple desktop with the spinning wheel, but no further.
32-bit macosx
sata hard disk
iso image of my 10.5 disc1 (bootcamp) on ide, also tried passthru of my dvd drive
1 cpu
2gb ram
32mb vram
bridged ethernet (cable unplugged)
usb enabled
sound/shared folders/clipboard/2d/3d - all disabled
pae/nx, vt-x, nested paging, i/o apic, efi - all enabled
64-bit macosx guest plain does not work - it doesn't even get as far as the oracle vm splash screen before the efi bios, no dvd/hdd activity although cpu usage spikes.
is only snow leopard 10.6 supported, not leopard 10.5?

I have Leopard up & running.
Not all CPU models supported. Only some very specific CPUs supported.

Re: Mac OS X guest doesn't work in v3.2 !
would be nice if the cpu info was listed in the changelog.
i'm trying to boot from two 10.5 dvd's that came with my mac mini (first one is labelled bootcamp) i'm wondering if it requires leopard to already be installed or something - not a very useful restore dvd if that is the case!
if my core i5-750 cpu is supported i might buy a $29 10.6 upgrade dvd as you can also do a clean install from those (snow leopard doesn't actually require leopard to be installed).
techno - i thought you had it running on macosx on a mac, not linux on a pc?

Re: Mac OS X guest doesn't work in v3.2 !
yes so that's obviously going to work, we're trying to get it to work on non-mac, as its available as a guest type on linux (and windows?) so it should work.....Technologov wrote:Yes, I have Mac running on Mac. See my other thread.

Re: Mac OS X guest doesn't work in v3.2 !
Installing Mac OS X will only work on Apple hardware. Anything else is a violation of the Apple end-user license and is not going to work.
There is no CPU restriction; you should just use the OS X cd that came with your Apple machine. Older versions might not support newer CPUs.

Re: Mac OS X guest doesn't work in v3.2 !
so why is it listed as a guest in linux if it won't work? (we already know it does work on certain hardware/vmware, even if apple don't like it) or is that for people who have put linux on their macs who want to run osx in a vm?sandervl wrote:Installing Mac OS X will only work on Apple hardware. Re: Mac OS X guest doesn't work in v3.2 !
Probably, It is for people who install Linux on Apple Mac.
Altough, it may make sense to hide this option from the GUI on non-Apple hardware.

Re: Mac OS X guest doesn't work in v3.2 !
@sej7278: It does only work on certain other hardware because of modification concerning the bootloader. But these require shipping the binary encryption keys which are usually only present on apple hardware. This can be regarded as illegal and is therefore not the case in VirtualBox. I wrote a more detailed explanation here:

So in other words, just use chameleon or other popular hackintosh boot loaders?

stmiller: VirtualBox is very high quality virtual hardware, so do whatever you wish...

well quite.stmiller wrote:So in other words, just use chameleon or other popular hackintosh boot loaders?
i was going to buy the snow leopard upgrade (or even a family pack) but now i'll probably use some hazard modifed copy.
apple are shooting themselves in the foot with their eula.
edit: the hazard snow leopard gets a lot further than an unmodified leopard, i still can't get it to boot but the installer finishes.

Re: Mac OS X guest doesn't work in v3.2 !
I tried to install snow leopard on my Mac Book Pro without success (host is opensolaris). I get the same spinning cursor and grey background described elsewhere. AFAICS this should be a supported scenario.

Re: Mac OS X guest doesn't work in v3.2 !
That specific limitation of the license is not valid in several countries based on consumer protection law. I, like many others, live in one such country (Brazil). As long as I have a licensed copy of OSX (and I do), I should be able to run it on non-Apple hardware.sandervl wrote:Installing Mac OS X will only work on Apple hardware. Any clues as of how many of us (vbox users) live in countries where this clause is voided by local law? If the ability to run OSX on non-Apple hardware were to be developed, would the project accept the patch?
