VB 7.0BETA - Festplatte wird bei MacOS Installation nicht angezeigt

Post by Holger-erf »

Hallo Forum,
Ciao Holger

Do you have access to the 7.0 Beta forum? viewforum.php?f=15

If so and you're actually trying to test 7.0, please let us know. We'll move this topic there.

Otherwise, if you're not attempting to test 7.0 and you really want a good working Mac guest, you might consider using 6.1.36. 7.0 Beta issues probably won't be fully worked through in the usual forum help way, as it cold be a problem with the beta rather than typical Virtualbox usage. If the problem occurs with released versions like 6.1.36, the forum will be able to help get your VM running.

Isn't this a general issue with macOS installs for years now? I'm not doing this routinely, but something in my memory hints you have to create filesystems first using Disk Utility and only after that the installer is able to work.

@klaus, @Holger-erf

You are correct. The macOS installer includes Disk Utility which is the tool to use to initialise the disk. The initialisation is not performed automatically by the installer.

 Reminds me of fdisk before installing Windows ME.

Hello Forum,
thank you very much for your help.
I opened Disk Utility in the macOS installation process and deleted (formatted) the virtual HD. Then the HD was displayed and I could start the installation process.
Unfortunately, I could not complete the installation because the Virtual Machine was so extremely slow that macOS got stuck when logging in as a user or entering the Apple ID. I am working with a 2018 Mac mini with 32GB RAM. It would be good if Virtual Box would become significantly faster.
Thanks a lot
Ciao Holger

Start the VM from full normal shutdown, not save-state. Run until you see the problem happen, then shut down the VM from within the VM's OS if possible. If not possible, close the Virtualbox window for the VM with the Power Off option set.

Right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show Log. Save the far left tab's log, zip it, and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

Welcome to the new turtle execution mode for macOS hosts, which is the result of VirtualBox not using the deprecated macOS kernel extensions (kexts) any more. under certain conditions.

I'm not sure about those conditions, though. One condition would be using VirtualBox on an Apple Silicon based host, which is not the case here. Another condition would be deliberately using the --driverless argument when starting the VM.

Driverless mode is always used for all macOS builds, no matter the host architecture or version of macOS.

If this also holds true for the sources in the public SVN repository, which mechanism does enforce that? I'm sure I must be overlooking something ...

Our amd64 macOS build box has a local override to force driverless mode, this is not something you can see in the public svn right now.
