VirtualBox 7.0 Beta Windows 11 Guest 3D-Acceleration problem

Post by ElectricEel »

I have graphics problem in Windows 11 in VirtualBox 7.0 Beta with 3D-Acceleration enabled. It works normally if i turn off 3D-Acceleration. Maybe because Beta version?

Check 'Transparency Effects' in Windows Settings and if it is turned on, toggle it to 'off' and reboot with 3D enabled to see if there is any change.

If I check the 3D option in my VM, it won't start. A blank window opens and it crashes. Tried it for Windows 10 & 11.

I encountered the same problem. Win 10 guest can start only when I uncheck the 3D-Acceleration option. Host OS is Win 10 too.

The 3D code is all new, so it might be a host hardware/driver specific issue. Do you get a VBox.log file despite the crashes? Because that would be useful for collecting information which helps fixing such incompatibility.

Uninstall the VirtualBox Guest Additions, reboot the guest OS and re-install the VirtualBox Guest Additions. Afterwards, check the VBox.log file for the version numbers.

@klaus: What is expected to happen when VirtualBox 7.0.0 is combined with the VirtualBox WDDM driver 6.1.36? ;)

The old 6.1.x GA driver with 7.0 will not give working 3D acceleration. This is expected behavior which I hope our developers can improve over time. If you want 3D with VirtualBox 7 you must have matching Guest Additions installed.

It seems that Guest Additions 7.0 beta2 cannot be installed on Windows 10 guest successfully. Although the installation process completed successfully without any error, the tray icon of Guest Additions could not be found on the taskbar and the resolution of screen restored to 1024x768.

I found that Guest Additions 7.0 beta 1 can be installed on Windows 10 successfully. The VM display effect is acceptable with some defects when I enabled 3D-Acceleration in VM settings and Transparency effects in Windows 10 Personalization settings.
