What's 100% for installing VirtualBox additions?

Post by birdie »

To be honest I don't understand why this button has 100% on it, it's clickable, it folds when you click it and unfolds when you click it again.

What's wrong with the message? Pretty clearly says what happened.

For newer Windows versions you'll only need to install Guest Additions manually once, and after that it'll be automatically updated when you use Devices -> Insert Guest Additions CD Image...

No need to click around any more.

If this update automatism fails then the message you saw is produced and you need to do the GA install yourself, as before.

This is kinda illogical. If something has finished it should indicate so. I read "100%" as something stuck.

Maybe replace 100% with "OK". There's no [need for a] progress indicator in the first place anyways. It's either Completed or Not.

In our book 100% always means complete. A pending operation is always between 0 and 99%.

When was the last time you used Windows?

Even Windows Updates get stuck in 100% far too often.

Again, guest additions are either installed or not, you have no means to show anything in between 0 and 100%, so this progress indicator is 100% ( ) useless.

Virtualbox != Windows. Different devs, different programs, different paradigms, etc. QED

This means that when 100% is showing in Virtualbox, the process is complete. Seems simple enough to understand to me.

If it seems hard to grasp, an enhancement request may be in order. Politely expressed, of course...

I have to agree that 100% doesn't always mean really complete, it just means that it's more than 99.5% there. Usually there would be some explicit indication, e.g. a completion dialog pops up, or a progress bar turns green etc. Still, it's hardly an earth shattering problem - you would soon get used to how this particular feature works.

Another point for this "confusion" could be the progress indicator inside the butten.
I too am used to a seperate "ok/continue"exit/whatever" button which appears or gets enabled whten the progress reaches 100%.
