Build 6.1.35 r151866 (Qt5.6.2) Fails Install Additions

Post by Khun_Doug »

This is using the latest test build, 6.1.35 r1151866. Fresh install of Windows 11 build 22000.778. Host PC is Windows 11 build 22621.160. The guest installs fine using the registry hacks to bypass the initial Windows 11 tests. Once the guest PC restarts and any updates are applied I try to add the VirtualBox Integration tools. I have tried installing as a regular user and with administrator privilege. The result is the same, the install crashes and is incomplete.

I am attaching the logs from the VM and screen shots.

Host PC hardware is Ryzen 5950X, Asrock X570 Creator, 64GB RAM, 2 X 1TB M.2 PCIe4 SSD.

FWIW, I was trying 6.1.97 that is available for download. BUT, every time I install and allow the VirtualBox Additions to install, and they succeed installing, I get an unbootable VM. The diagnostics and repair fail to do anything and the VM is finished. So I decided to go to the latest 6.1.35. Seems I stumbled across something .. ugh.

The VirtualBox developers already know about the GA installation failure and are investigating it. For the time being:

On Windows guests, please use the VirtualBox Guest Additions 6.1.34 together with VirtualBox 6.1.35r151866 installations.

Thanks for the rapid response, fth0. Do you know if the same applies to the GA for 6.1.97? Once I install the 6.1.97 GA tools, the VM becomes permanently unbootable.

So the 6.1.34 GA tools combined with 6.1.35 r151866 still fails to install. The guest is 22000.776. It's the very same error I get when trying to install the 6.1.35 r151888 GA tools.

FWIW, I completely uninstalled the entire VirtualBox installation. I also removed the added files that remain after the uninstall. I also removed the .VirtualBox files from my profile. I then removed the Vbox*.sys files from the System32/Drivers folder. And finally I removed the VM so everything was starting fresh. As best I know, this is a virgin install of Windows 11 22000.776 using 6.1.35 r151866. None of the GA tools will install.

I am able to install using 6.1.97, but the 6.1.97 GA tools installation results with a machine that will not start.

VirtualBox 6.1.97r150532 is quite old and I cannot say anything about the corresponding GA. If you want me to take a look, please provide a (zipped) VBox.log file from an "unbootable" run of the VM.

Hmm. You could try the following: Insert the GA ISO, and in a Command Prompt with administrator privileges, navigate to the cert folder of the DVD image and execute VBoxCertUtil.exe add-trusted-publisher vbox*.cer --root vbox*.cer, then retry the GA installation. This may or may not work.

Fth0,

Regarding the 6.1.97 builds: Some other thread in the forums referenced that build and wrote that it was, essentially, the rev 7 build. My own thought was that the r150532 was lower than r151866, so I was questioning this from the start. I will ignore that older build.

As for any progress on 6.1.35 r151866: I can find no combination of Windows 11 and GA tools install that works. I tried adding the certs as you described. The certs do install, but the same exact error occurs. I tried using Windows 11 build 22000.776, allowed it to upgrade to 22000.778, and a clean install of 22621. All fail to install the GA tools. The good news is the cert installation process works correctly across all the builds, so that's something.

Since you seem to know more about errors that have been reported / documented, does this warrant me submitting a bug report? As it stands, 6.1.35 r151866 will not allow the GA tools to install in any fresh installation of Windows 11, including the build 22621 that is supposedly going to be build 22H2 coming sometime later this year.

The VirtualBox development snapshots 6.1.97r<nnnnnn> are snapshots from the VirtualBox 7.0 development. Apparently, there hasn't been time to update them for a few months now (perhaps since ~March 2022).

Thanks for the offer, but I don't think it's necessary, since the VirtualBox developers already know about it (also, see 20992). I don't know if and how it will be solved for future test builds, because they do not undergo the Microsoft Attestation signing, which is done for the VirtualBox release builds (e.g. 6.1.34, 6.1.36).

To at least try 6.1.35 to see if the CPU losing time issue from 6.1.34 had been fixed, I took the long and thorough path to get 6.1.35 installed and GA tools installed in the Windows 11 guest.

- I made sure there were no tools installed in the guest
- I completely removed all VB install from the host
- Made sure the VBox*.sys files were removed
- Made sure the extension pack was removed from Program Files\Oracle]VirtualBox
- Install VB 6.1.34
- Start the guest and add the 6.1.34 GA tools
- Shutdown the guest
- Uninstall 6.1.34 and install 6.1.35
- Restart host as needed for installs

That process completed but not without trouble. At one of the steps the host got a GSOD with something referencing VB. I let it take the memory dump and moved on. Eventually I was able to get 6.1.35 installed and the older GA on the guest. The good news here is that I could not duplicate the CPU lagging issue I experienced with 6.1.34. The bad news is the sound stopped working at some point and I had to power-cycle the guest to get sound back. Seems Windows 11 hosts will continue to be a problem for now.

I just tried this and it the GA install still fails. The same exact error with something that fails to install and then the GA install halts. Worse, I was hopeful this trick might allow my test build 25151 to upgrade to 25158. No such luck. The 25158 install begins and then halts when checking for TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot.

So far, the only successful path to get any build to install is to use VB 6.1.34, the latest build that allows GA to install. Then download the ISO for whatever build of Windows 11 to test. In this case I want to test build 25158, and Microsoft released the ISO for that build. The process will be to get a blank hard drive, boot the ISO, use the Shift-F10 trick to add registry tweaks to bypass installation checks, then install the OS. Finally install the GA.Then it is okay to move to a higher rev VB, but do NOT change the GA as none of the test VB build GA will install.

I haven't found a solution that permits me to do an in-place upgrade once the initial installation is complete. All the test builds stop on compatibility checks. For evaluation it is okay to toss away an install and put up the next build. But in practical use scenario this won't work: People don't want to lose their work.
