Updating: "Simply run the installer..."?

The 6.0.4 manual states, "To update Oracle VM VirtualBox, simply run the installer of the updated version"
But as far as I can tell, the "installer" on Solaris 10 is pkgadd, and when I try to use this, I get:
"Current administration requires that a unique instance of the
<SUNWvbox> package be created. However, the maximum number of
instances of the package which may be supported at one time on the
same system has already been met.
No changes were made to the system."
Is there some way pkgadd can know this is an update, and not a fresh install?
I can't use the on-board updater, since I get this error:
"The network operation failed with the following error: SSL authentication failed"
