All attempts at starting a functional Windows 7 x64 Enterprise edition guest (Works with 5.0.16), ends in a crash.

This is on a Lenovo T530 with NVidia Discrete graphics, 16GB RAM.

From the VBox.log file it appears to crash when a text display is attempted and the VGA device is not in text mode, that is if I am interpreting the output correctly

This is a regression with 5.0.18 and we have a fix in the form of a test build (until the next official maintenance release is available).

You can find this interim test build for Solaris here: https://www.virtualbox.org/download/tes ... nOS.tar.gz
For other host platforms, please check this page: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Testbuilds (revision 106742)

Worth mentioning that this only happens to users who do not use the default Windows VM configuration.

Thanks, that appears to have done the trick.

I'll try to build a default config for windows and compare the two.

No need. See last comment here: https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/15317
