Loading Windows 8 in Solaris Virtualbox Green Screen fail

Post by nxahoward »

I'm trying to load Virtualbox in a solaris host for my plex environment (I'm never one to take the easy route when I want to learn something, namely ZFS.) Currently when I try and start the vm to install windows 8.1 it acts like it will start to load and then goes to this green screen looking thing. I'm running oracle solaris 11.2 and my physical config is:

x2 5520 processors
X8DTi Dual Socket LGA1366
64GB DDR3 1066

solaris is installed on a 64GB cruzer glide with 59.9GB remaining for free space and my vm storage drive is a 320GB WD hard drive. Any thoughts on why this is broken?

The only error I see is about not being able to take a snapshot. There were errors in past around this. Try disabling preview in the GUI. I also run a Win 8.1 VM under Solaris.

I haven't even booted to the ISO, much less installed anything or taken a snapshot.

It looks like a display error, that and the fact that it is complaining about audio. Do you have any weird display settings, such as 3D acceleration?

I am at a loss except to say that it very much appears screen-related and it keeps getting errors that the buffer is invalid (whatever that means). It tries several resolutions and pixel color depths before finally giving up.

Your image appears to show a stock GNOME VirtualBox window, presumably running under X. Is there anything weird about the host display?

You only have 32 MB of video RAM?

VRamSize <integer> = 0x0000000002000000 (33 554 432, 32 MB)

You might try bumping that to 128 MB and see if that helps. I read somewhere that Windows 8 loves video memory.

I tried that and no dice.

Oddly enough windows 10 loaded with no issues. So I guess I'll buy a windows 10 license when I need to....
