Oracle 11 database installation crashes Virtual Box
Oracle 11 database installation crashes Virtual Box
I have Virtual Machine 4.3.6 on an x86 box running Solaris 11. The Virtual Machine is also Solaris 11. I am trying to install Oracle Database 11.2.3 on it. I am using the command "./runInstaller", this starts fine and gets through most of the installation process but when it gets about 60% through creating the database, the Virtual Machine crashes. It will restart without problems.
What more information do you need about this problem The Virtual Machine has enough space and memory.
Thanks

Re: Oracle 11 database installation crashes Virtual Box
Sorry, its been so long, but my test machines have been off the network and I couldn't get the log files
Version of Virtual Box 4.3.6r91406
Host operating system Solaris 11.1
Host Hardware Dell Poweredge 1950 x86
Host memory?
Guest Additions; yes
Guest Operating System: Solaris 11.1
Guest Memory: 12 Gig
Odd Notes, this doesn't happen when the Guest machine isn't connected to network, it doesn't install correctly but it gets further before it stops.
I am trying to install Oracle Database 11.02 Release 3
The runInstaller cause the Virtual Machine to hit a critical error and the machine execution has been stopped.
This happens at 42% of the copy file stage, when the Gui claims to be "Extracting files to /u01/app/oracle/product/11.20.0/dbhome_1"
I get the same error on the previous version of Virtual Box too.

Re: Oracle 11 database installation crashes Virtual Box
So far, it looks like you're running out of RAM either in the host or the guest, but without the log file, nothing can be done here.

Re: Oracle 11 database installation crashes Virtual Box
I tried to put the log file on my last post. Let me try to upload that again
I had an error message "The file is too big, maximum size is 128 KiB."
I've split it up and will put on the log file
I think I left it out earlier, but the host machine has 24 Gigs of Memory

Re: Oracle 11 database installation crashes Virtual Box
... or you could have uploaded the file as one zip. Not sure why you didn't. And is all this is just one log? How long since you last shut down this VM?
Re: Oracle 11 database installation crashes Virtual Box
I didn't think of a zip file. I don't think I shut this VM down from the time it was created. I rebooted it a couple of times to make sure it would reboot. This isn't the only log file merely the latest. I wanted to see if I could get Oracle Database 11.02.03 to install on a Solaris 11 VM, if there oracle files were on a seperate virtual hard drive, and the rpool was on a 50 Gig virtual hard drive. I had had failures with a single Virtual Hard drive of 70 Gig. I am now repeating that attempt to see if the failure is reoccurs and if so I will open another ticket.

Re: Oracle 11 database installation crashes Virtual Box
And you upgraded VirtualBox one or more times while the VM was suspended?
If a saved state is still attached then I suggest discarding it and see if the VM will boot then.

Re: Oracle 11 database installation crashes Virtual Box
No I had tried this on a previous machine with a different version of Virtual Box and got essentially the same result. I can get the Virtual Machine running by going back to the previous snapshot, or sometimes by just shutting it down and restarting it. Is there a newer version of Virtual Box? I was trying the latest version in the hopes that the problem might have been fixed.
Re: Oracle 11 database installation crashes Virtual Box
Assuming this was related to bug 12676 which was my problem on other Virtual machines, I tried the fix for that bug
"VBoxManage setextradata VM_NAME "VBoxInternal/MM/CanUseLargeHeap" 1"
I ran that and then retried installing oracle database 11.02.03 The installation was a success. I've put in the latest patches and plan to let the Vritual Machine run for a couple days to see if it crashes unexpectedly.
