no USB devices in 4.1.0 on Solaris

Post by Rockford »

Me and a friend are using Solaris Express snv151
(upgraded from Opensolaris)

1. On a machine with no USB defined filters we get "no availible devices" (translated errmsg from swedish) in settings, USB, add filter.
2. When clicing the USB icon we no longer get any popups with boxes for our currently atteched USB devices.
3. If a machin HAS defined filters it will report an USB error when trying to start.
i dont remenber the error, but i might have been VERR_ACCESS_DENIED.

All drivers seems to be loaded when checking modinfo |grep -i box
I tried to install old extension pack and old guests but that did not work either.
I tried to boot a machine with only USB1.0 support, still no luck.
I tried to reinstall and reboot several times on my box and on my friends box.
I helped my friend to boot his old clone with Virtualbox 4.0.12 and USB was working again.

Hardware used:
1. Athlon64 3200+ on Nforce3 DFI Lanparty UT mobo
2. Intel I5 660

Final is already released, so this topic has no reason to exist here. Moving to Solaris Hosts.

I take it you have installed the extension pack and that you user name is on the vboxusers group?

Note: On Solaris it's "vboxuser" and not "vboxusers" because of the, god knows for what, default 8-character limit...

Yup you are right. I write this so often for others and so seldom for Solaris I sometimes forget and add the "s" at the end. And yes I do feel your pain with the 8 characters.

Either me or my friend have ever needed to edit /etc/group and add our users to the vboxuser group. And doing it will still nog make Vbox 4.1.0 USB work.

We have been using Virtualbox a long time and this is the first time both our USB support stops to work after an upgrade.

Is anyone else using Solaris 151 and the latest Virtualbox version?
Is Extensionpack essential even for USB 1.0 support?
if yes i could check crc on the extension file or download it again.

It seems to be some permission problem, but neither of us have done anything else but upgrading virtualbox as we usually been doing the last 1-2 years everytime a new version has come which usually is never a problem.

VirtualBox 4.1 requires users that need to passthrough USB devices to VMs to be part of "vboxuser" group. Not prior versions.

You are NOT supposed to directly edit /etc/group yourself. Please undo whatever changes you made to that file. And run this command instead:

Code: Select all

usermod -G vboxuser <yourusername>
Then logout and re-login as <yourusername> and try VirtualBox and USB.

This is also explained clearly in the manual: http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch02.html#idp5760144

Thank you, it worked!

I dont read the whole manual every update.
I was expecting the changelog to link to upgrade instructions.
Perhaps i missed some information when doing pkg install since its so much text to read about overriding files and stuff.

Glad it works. The package installation output doesn't mention it either, maybe I should've put it in there for the first release. There is also a changelog but it's not obvious on the details for other reasons. My apologies.
