I decided to upgrade my vbox to latest 3.1.4.
Let me say that my host hardware cannot use ioapic+virtex.
It's a v20z amd biprocessor, running Solaris 10/08.
The machine runs 4 guests: 2 Solaris 10/08, 1 Windows 2003, 1 Linux Centos.
I hoped to notice a performance improvement on the Solaris virtual guest.
Actually to me it seems almost the same.
What I see strange is network performance.
First of all, I hope we will soon have a virtio support for solaris guests.
Secondly I made some tests, and the results I cannot explain:
- I used netio on both host->solaris-guest and host->windows-guest
- throughput was almost similar, ranging from 100 to 200Mbits/s
- Then I used netio on both laptop->solaris-guest and laptop->windows-guest (lan switch is 100Mbits/s)
- throughput was different: almost 100Mbits/s to windows, up to 50Mbits/s to solaris
My question is: why do I have such a difference on throughput, considering that all the traffic
is going into the host and then the guests, if traffic from host to guests is similar and higher than
my lan switch capacity?
