I see that there are many "preview" releases since 2009.06 that are available on genunix.org. Is one of those recommended over 2009.06 for use as a VirtualBox host? Or should I stick with 2009.06?

2009.06 will not give you any Virtual Box USB support - you need snv_124 or later for "experimental" USB support. My USB printers, scanners, external drives worked fine with a WinXP guest in snv_130. It's a try it and see situation.
