VirtualBox dvd passthrough setup howto??

Post by ljw1 »

Looking for some help in setting up opensolaris to allow virtualbox root access to the dvd drive so that the guests can burn dvd's. Running virtualbox using pfexec does not work as the xserver denies access. Additionallly once you can get it started by allowing root access to the xauthority file virtualbox thinks it is owned by root and all of the guests are unavailable. If anybody has an elegant solution to this it would be most appreciated.

Bump

Any word on this? Would really like to get VBox working properly under OpenSolaris, or I guess it'll have to be back to Ubuntu or Debian for me :-(

You need to run VirtualBox as root. There is no way around this because Solaris forces root access for every SCSI pass through command and not just for opening the device. Running as pfexec would fallback to normal user once the hardening bits are verified hence this is probably not enough.

Thanks. I hate to have to do that, but I'll take ownership of the VM as root and try that out tonight.
