OS/2 Warp is not free software. But you can buy older versions pretty cheep on ebay. OS/2 Warp 3 or Warp Connect cost usually 1 to 5 EUR plus shipping,.
This should work with MS VirtualPC (windows) or Parallels Workstation (Linux).

The only OS/2 operating system that is supported by Virtualbox but on some hosts is OS/2 Warp 4 MCP2 (version 4.52).

If you have the correct host, no version of os/2 works on vista x64.

please define free versus 1$? I think what he wants to know if IBM comes charging at the gate if he installs OS/2 from the net.

OS/2

Thank You for your reply.

I wanted to use it as a guest as I tried Linux and got scared of it.
I remember many moons ago when OS/2 was being developed by microsoft and IBM, it was slick and ahead of it's time.

It's a shame that IBM did not continue to develop it for consumers as I believe that it would be a true competitor to Windows.

Thanks I will look on e-bay and the link mentioned above.

Again Thanks :)

At least combination eCS host eCS guest does not work on. eCS guest cannot be installed in VBox/2 eCS host.

Currently the last version of VBox/2 is 1.6.1_OSE. See link below:

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From:Mark Dodel <feedbackDESPAM@DESPAMos2voice.org>

Paul Smedley has another unofficial build of the Open Source Edition of VirtualBox for OS/2 host. Note there is no official OS/2 host, but some former Innotek employees and others have worked on a version for OS/2 based on the Open Source Edition of VirtualBox. An explanation of the differences between this OSE version and the closed source version can be found here: http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Editions

Get Vbox/2 here: http://www.smedley.info/os2ports/index. ... virtualbox

"Another SVN update"

Download: http://download.smedley.info/virtualbox ... 31-os2.zip

Official website: http://www.virtualbox.org
"innotek VirtualBox is a family of powerful x86 virtualization products for enterprise as well as home use."

Official unofficial builds of the OS/2 host can be found at ftp://ftp.dmik.org/pub/common/vbox/

User Manual: http://virtualbox.org/download/1.5.4/UserManual.pdf

There is a support forum for the OS/2 host on the Innotek VirtualBox website: http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewforum.php?f=10

If you'd like to help support continued development of this projects (and others) for OS/2 & eComStation, please consider making a donation either via Paypal using the link on Paul's website, or using the Mensys Online Store http://www.mensys.net/os2ports/

To Ralphosle's original question, OS/2 is not free (and probably never will be).

One can think of eComStation as OS/2 Warp v5 - i.e. this is the ongoing development of OS/2.

If you want to take a look at eComStation a cut-down / Live-CD version of eCS 1.2
is
available from http://www.ecomstation.com.

This is version 1.2, whereas the current version is 2.0RC4, but if you haven't seen eCS this is a simple (non-destructive) way to take a look.

Cheers/2

Ed.

OS/2 was marketed as proprietary software and it is no longer legally available.

IBM stopped legally selling OS/2 on 23 December 2005 and ended support for the operating system on 31 December 2006. The last stable release for OS/2 is v4.52 in December 2001.

Just because that OS/2 is no longer legally available to OEM channels and retail outlets does not mean that you can buy it elsewhere. RetroSoftware is the only place where you can purchase IBM OS/2 Warp version 4 and it costs $299.

I'm planning on getting it for Christmas and try installing it on Virtual PC. :D
