I've encountered an interesting/strange problem while using VirtualBoxOSE on FreeBSD.
It appears I can only run a maximum of 15 VM's. Running a 16th VM causes the VM host to have "issues" but also causes all of the VM's to stop responding. It looks like it blocks on disk IO in the VMs and causes strange problems for the host. Killing that 16th vm results in things recovering and starting to work normally.
I found out there was a previous limit related to the tunable "kern.ipc.semmni" which could be fixed by setting it higher at boot, however that doesn't seem to affect this issue.
Maxmimum number of VMs?

Re: Maxmimum number of VMs?
Humm,
I would be curious to know how much RAM was being utilised, and what the processor load was. AFAIK the MAX limit is much higher, but is limited to the hosts resources.
I know for a fact that you can run 120+ DSL guests if you set them properly and have the resources available.

The system had 24GB of ram, only 10GB of which was utilized.Perryg wrote:Humm,

The processor load was well under %10.
The System is/was a Dual-Quadcore Nehalem Xeon.

Re: Maxmimum number of VMs?
It may be related to very limited QA that VirtualBox is getting on FBSD hosts, and likely a non-issue on Linux hosts.
