Note: if you install Gnome 3 you will loose the Unity desktop in Ubuntu. I suggest that you install a separate 11.04 guest for this. On fedora if you want to get back to the default just shut down the guest and disable 3D acceleration.
Additional Note: release 4.0.8 has the ability to run Gnome 3 now.
Ubuntu
Installing the Gnome 3 plus shell will show an issue if you do not install from tty. Follow the instructions below to install the Gnome 3 desktop and shell.
Code: Select all
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install gnome-shell
Fedora 15
All you need to do to get Gnome 3 to work in Fedora 15 is to disable selinux. They are black listing the VBoxOGL to keep it from working until the release of VBox that has the fixes.
Problems encountered in both.
Forget seamless mode. It will not work. Extensive compositing causes this to fail (at least at this time).
VRDE: Here again since all remote desktop server and clients rely on RFB even if you do connect all you will likely see is the desktop wall paper.
Opening system info seems to freak out both Ubuntu and Fedora and you end up with a WSOD (white screen of death).
Minimizing and maximizing causes black screen. Clicking in the guest window helps but holding the left mouse and dragging around to select the screen is the only work-around I have found.
Using saved state seems to cause a lot of aborts when restarting. You can log off the session and the save state the login screen and it works reliably. Probably why the shutdown is not in the main screen. Even using the alt key to bring up the shutdown feature after opening the menu seems to not work.
Note: I will add more problems and features as I find them.
