Guest Addition iso not mounting correctly

Post by azdour »

Hi,

I'm running Ubuntu 8.04. I've installed Windows XP on VirtualBox OSE 1.5.6. I've followed the instructions to get access to the guest additions. The iso is downloaded but I think its corrupt. When I go to the cd-rom drive under Win XP it reports:

"windows cannot read from this disk"

I've tried to unmount it and mount the iso through the devices menu but I still hit the same error.

Is there a md5 checksum I can run against the iso, and is there another place I can download it from?

Thanks in advance.

Version 1.5.6 is ancient now, it's over a year old. Please update to a newer version. After that, you can grab the correct ISO, and check it's MD5 hash, on http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox

Hi,

Thanks for the info.

It looks like I'd have to upgrade the whole o/s to Jaunty or above to easily get hold of the latest package that synaptic can install. Not sure at the moment if I want to take the source route and compile it myself (although I may not have an option).

In the meantime I downloaded the ISO for 1.6.0 from the link you provided. I was going to see if that worked :) The ISO is fine but the license agreement that pops up is for PUEL not OSE. Do you have an url for OSE? Am I also looking for trouble by attempting to install an ISO from a newer version on an old VirtualBox OSE?

UPDATE: From what I understand the PUEL allows to redistribute unmodified copies of the iso? So can I use the PUEL ISO for the OSE and still remain under GNU General Public License, Version 2?

Yes, that should be possible. The ISO you got is only the combined build of the GA from source, packaged in an installer. The normal output of the compiled source would be some system files you need to place in the right location and register them after that (in case of the Windows GA).

Hi,

Thanks.

So to be clear I can install the ISO guest additions (with the PUEL agreement that appears when you install them) without invalidating GNU General Public License, Version 2, i.e. after installing GA it doesn't constrain me to the PUEL for the whole of VirtualBox?

I'm not in a place to make a final answer on this, that's up to one of the devs to answer. However, from what I remember, it was perfectly fine to install the GA from the ISO that is packaged with the PUEL version on the OSE version. It should not give you the obligations the PUEL license would ask of you.
