When compiling the OSE edition of virtualbox, I keep seeing references to VBOX_WITH_VIDEOHWACCEL, but it is never set anywhere (all cases where it is set it is it's own condition).
Is this feature only for 2d hardware acceleration on windows host, or is this some non-open support (like VBOX_WITH_USB is).
It is also only supported by the Frontend/VirtualBox frontend (not the sdl or bfe or other frontends). I get the feeling it is a windows host only supported thing, but no comments to lead me either way.

Re: 2d Video Hardware Acceleration
If you are talking about version 3.0.X
It is basically for hardware acceleration in Windows Guests at the moment.
It adds support for DirectX 8/9 and is experimental, but functional.
I don't believe that it is PUEL specific though.
