VirtualBox OSE 2.1.4 on Mac OS X 10.5.6 - host interface

I successfully compiled OSE 2.1.4 on my mac (10.5.6) and ran load.sh with no issues. I can create and run a normal Windows XP VM with NAT networking. However, I am not able to start the VM when networking is attached to "host interface". I always receive this error:
Is there anything in particular I need to do to get networking functional for the host interface?
